I'm Art! My pronouns are they/them or he/him.

This got long, haha

As well as being [personal profile] obstinatecondolement here, I am also [tumblr.com profile] obstinatecondolement on Tumblr, obstinatecondolement on vidders.net (which I really must post some of my vids to!), obstinatecondolement on Vimeo (most of my videos are password protected, but they are all posted with the passwords on AO3), and (you guessed it) obstinatecondolement on my much neglected Pillowfort.

In terms of my other fannish pseudonyms, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver on AO3; [twitter.com profile] unmanlygrief on Twitter (Edit Jan 2023: but, uh, given current events, watch this space? Edit Jan 2024: Still there for now, but I probably would have deleted if I didn't want to do ITPE and since I do not think that will be on the-platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter in 2024, it's not unlikely that I won't be there much longer either, but I have made such threats before and not followed through on them), and I am also unmanlygrief on Discord.

Feel free to add me or PM/DM me on any of these platforms, or email me at obstinatecondolement@vidding.com if you'd like to get in touch that way.

Let's talk fandoms! I am an evergreen Star Trek fan, despite beyind disgracefully behind on most of the newer iterations of canon bar Lower Decks, and I was very monofannishly creating things for The Karate Kid and/or Cobra Kai for a good while, but I have started branching out again in the past few years. I am still a big TKK/CK fan (Cobra Kai never dies!) and mean to write some stuff on my to-do list, but I am not as intense with it as I was and other things have drifted in and out of my number one spot in the mean time.

Most recently, I've fallen very hard for the CBS Ghosts show, I had a very intense love affair with Succession that may be heating up again, I was massively invested in S1 of OFMD and slightly disappointed with S2 (although not as devastated as some were), I love Only Murders in the Building and am chipping away at some Mabel/Theo fic that has not yet seen the light of day, and I pretty recently reignited my younger self's love of the 1970s sitcom Porridge. I am a lifelong Discworld fan, but I only started writing fic in the fandom in 2023. As of now I have a handful of Discworld fics and podfics on my AO3 account that I hope to keeping adding to on and off.

Other things that are less to the forefront, but are still very much bubblings away in the background: I love Quantum Leap, both old and new, and am even now still rending my garments in lamentation over the Willow tv show and A League of Their Own (2022) being cancelled. And, honestly, I have lots of other fandoms, past and present, and there are a few that I often request for exchanges and am not usually "active" in otherwise.

The ways I participate in fandom are larely writing fic, but I am a bit of a fanwork dilettante and have also dipped my toes into vidding, podfic, fanbinding, writing meta (or jokey-joke posts, depending on how serious I am being at the time), making character/ship fanmixes, and putting together the occasional graphic (mostly podfic covers at the moment). I also have made a few fancrafts over the years! Mostly crochet dolls of Star Trek characters, like these ones. I have also betaed fic for other people and I would like to do that more often.

My transformative works policy can be found on my AO3 profile, but TL;DR, I give blanket permission for non-commercial transformative works of my fanworks.

Other things I do/have done in fandom are volunteering with the OTW as a tag wrangler and modding a few fandom events. I modded [tumblr.com profile] allvalley100, a weekly Cobra Kai/Karate Kid drabble challenge, with [tumblr.com profile] trinityofone from 2021–2023, I previously modded [tumblr.com profile] trek-rarepair-swap, a (first monthly, then quarterly) exchange where people created fanworks for each other's rare (which we defined as <50 works on AO3) Star Trek ships, with [tumblr.com profile] cosmic-llin between 2016 and 2020 and we have plans to revive it at some point when we have the time, and I will be starting a new podfic challenge called [community profile] tidepodchallenge in January 2024 where participants receive bingo cards with prompts and then fill them by making podfics of Yuletide works written by authors who give permission for podfics of their work. If you are a fan of podic, please follow the comm and, if you are a podficcer youself, consider signing up once I get the ball rolling on that in the next few weeks!

Non-fandom things to know about me are that I am bisexual, disabled, transmasc, a leftist, I love fibre arts and textiles (crochet, knitting, weaving, spinning, dyeing, sewing), I sing, I am (slowly) learning the cello, I love spreadsheets and planners (I am the most disorganised orderly person you will ever meet), I live with (most of) my siblings and parents, and, as well partial custody of the family pets (dogs, chickens, another cat), I have two very spoiled cats of my own.

I tend to go through phrases of being more and less active on Dreamwidth, but what I mostly post about here is just various things that are going on with me in real life, stuff about my hobbies, goals that I'm working on or thinking about setting, etc. I very occasionally post links to fanworks, but I will try to keep more up to date with that going forward, as I have found DW fandom to be very rewarding when I do go to the effort of being more active in it. This is also where I tend to post my exchange letters, so you will probably at least hear from me once a year when I sign up to Yuletide. Most of my more personal, non-fandom entries are access-only, but I'm very liberal about granting access, so don't feel shy about asking!

Dear Yuletide author,

I am [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver on AO3. Thank you for offering one of my fandoms! I'm excited to see what you write.

Except for DNWs, everything I’ve said in this letter is extremely optional and I’ve only included what I have to give people who like a jumping off point some guidance into things I enjoy. Feel free to ignore whatever you don’t vibe with and read as much or as little of this as you like.

I don’t mean to imply any judgement with any of my DNWs and some of them are things that I do enjoy from time to time in some contexts, but aren’t things that I’d like as part of a gift work/that I’m in a headspace for right now.

Requests

I have included some suggestions for prompts below. I was able to write more for some fandoms than others, largely because I was able to plunder past letters for details for some fandoms and I wrote this letter over a couple of days and my brain was braining great toward the end, so any disparity in length or level of detail isn't a reflection on how much I like any of them and I will be equally delighted to receive a fic for any fandoms I've requested.

Porridge

Requested characters: Norman Stanley "Fletch" Fletcher; Lennie Godber

Something shippy would be lovely, if you were so inclined, but canon-typical gen would also be a delight. I'd love a "case fic" of some kind where they had to do some labyrinthine shenanigans to accomplish a goal of some variety, or a scene that implied a larger plot to that effect. Other thoughts I've had is that Fletch and Godber both had birthdays while in prison, so maybe you could do something about that? Godber feeling glum about turning 24 on the inside possibly? Fletch having his own inscrutible birthday-related feelings when he adds up how many he's spent on the inside versus out? Something more lighthearted and caper-adjacent than I'm suggesting? You could also do something more general with holidays/special occasions where they try to make the days feel different from each other, maybe up to and including inventing nonsense holidays to amuse themselves. If you wanted to write something post-canon that included stuff from Going Straight or Life Beyond the Box: Norman Stanley Fletcher, or that diverged from the spin-off and mockumentary if you wanted to go in other directions, that would be great! In terms of tone, I enjoy the comedic and silly vibe of canon but feel free to have more somber moments about life in prison, etc., if the mood strikes you. If you were interested in writing something shippy, I do also think that Fletch has about a metric tonne of internalised homophobia, so that's also something I'd be intrigued to read about.

The Producers (1968)

Requested characters: Max Bialystock; Leopold "Leo" Bloom

I really love the relationship between these two whether it's framed as shippy or platonic. For all that it starts out as a manipulation to try and get Leo more on board with committing fraud with him, it seems to turn very sincere and affectionate very quickly. I think both of them, in their own way, are very lonely at the start of the movie. Bialystock does, technically, have a sex life, albeit one that is having sex with his investors to fund his rapidly diminishing lifestyle, but I don't think it would be a stretch to say there is no intimacy in his life before their friendship develops. Leo, for his part, was never called by his first name even in kindergarten!

On the shippier side of things, it intrigues me that on Bialy's side of things, sexual relationships with women seem to be a means to get something rather than something he wants in their own right. He has sex with the little old ladies for money, he cat-calls women out the window to peacock and put Leo off-balance when he arrives to do his accounts, he hires Ulla to ogle but then turns her down every single time she propositions him, sometimes quite irritably. Obviously it's Not Great to use women as a status symbol, but is that what's going on? Is he maybe gay or ace?

While we're in headcanon territory, I also think that Leo Bloom pings very autistic (although I wouldn't use that specific terminology in a fic because it would be incongruous with the time period). His composure that rapidly gives way to emotional fragility and meltdowns, his job that involves a lot of tolerance for tedious repetition and attention to detail, his near-total social isolation and then intense devotion to a single friend, it all adds up into the most relatable character I have ever seen on screen. I also have thought on occasion that there is scope for a trans reading of him, with lines like "No one ever called me Leo before" and "I'm Leo Bloom! I'm me! I can do whaever I want! I'm Leo Bloom!" and his discomfort with gender non-comformity (when he meets Roger de Bris and is thrown by him wearing a dress and the "I'm not a madam; I'm a concierge!" scene), which I think have a different vibe when you interpret him as a stealth trans man in his mid-thirties in the late 60s. This would also, potentially, factor into his loneliness and social isolation, if he were stealth and trying to a) distance himself from his pre-transition life and b) avoid intimacy that could be compromising. If this was something you were intrigued by, I'd be interested in reading a fic along those lines, but it is far from the only take I'd be interested in reading about!

For some specific ideas, maybe something post-canon where they are putting Prisoners of Love from prison? Or maybe a canon-divergent fic where they were able to make it to Rio de Janeiro before it all went south. Do they immediately start a new scheme when they're there? Does Leo manage to convince Max to quit while they're ahead? Maybe something set during canon? A missing scene when they're going through scripts? Bialy telling Leo stories about his old shows?

Supacell

Requested characters: Sabrina Clarke, Sharleen Clarke, Rodney Cullen, Spud

This show was such a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre! It had such a strong sense of place and the characters were so distinct and vivid, and the premise genuinely felt like a novel take on a superhero origin story. As I mentioned in my sign up, if you would prefer, you can write a fic that just features Sharleen and Sabrina or one that just features Rodney and Spud rather than something with all four of them. Although, maybe something around the theme of family would lend itself to something that they'd all fit into?

I love that Sharleen and Sabrina are so different from each other, but that doesn't flatten them into a "bad girl vs good girl" stereotypical dynamic. Sabrina does let herself get coaxed out to the club (and, for that matter, tells Krazy that she will kill him herself and be the one going to prison for thirty years when she thinks Shar is in danger), Sharleen is writing her dissertation, and they both love each other so fiercely. If you wanted to go post-canon and show something about Sabrina trying to rescue her sister from where she's been kidnapped, that would be great, or you could go pre-canon and have something about the two of them growing up, or something that wove through pre-, during and post-canon. Maybe Rodney could bond with Sabrina about how horrifying it is for your loved ones to be in peril and for you to have no power to help, even with bloody superpowers.

With Rodney and Spud, I'm intrigued by what their relationship is. Is it romantic? If so, are they non-monogamous, or does Rodney just keep flirting with random women to keep in practice? They do seem to share all their money and I did assume they lived together in that one-bedroom flat until the line where Rodney says that Spud "stays over most nights". See also: Rodney saying they'd be shopping for a house once the money started coming in. I don't think it necessarily needs to be kissy-kissy for them to be life partners, of course, and a fic about them being in a QPP would also be great. It would also be pretty on-brand for Rodney to have sped past the trivial little details of asking someone out or telling him he like him before deciding they were going to spend the rest of their lives together.

The Tick (TV 2017)

Requested characters: Dorothy "Dot" Everest, Overkill, Arthur Everest, the Tick

As mentioned in my sign up, I'm open to something that only feaures Dot and Overkill or something that just features Arthur and the Tick if you don't have an idea for somethign with all four of them. I'm happy for something shippy involving either or both Dot/Overkill and Tick/Arthur, or something gen.

I love how this show combines campy superhero shenanigans with a more grounded approach to emotional storytelling. I'm totally in the market for either silly jokes or something with a more serious slant. Or, indeed, both! If you wanted to do sort of a mid-mission case fic (since 1000 words isn't a lot of scope for a full on plot along those lines) that would be really cool, or something not related to crime-fighting would also be fun. Maybe something where Arthur could flex his paperwork skills to save the day through administrative means? Dot and Overkill having to get bailed out by Arthur and the Tick for some antiheroics gone wrong? In the event you wanted to write something shippy with Tick/Arthur, I tend to prefer when smutty fic for this pairing is a bit off the beaten path and I think there's a lot of scope for some fun xenophilia-adjacent things. The "suit" being a living part of his body rather than something that can conveniently come off or make way for more conventional human anatomy is very compelling to me. With Dot/Overkill, I think that something that engages with Overkill's disabilities in an access intimacy kind of way would be really cool. Him allowing himself to be vulnerable around Dot by taking off/turning off his prostheses to be comfortable maybe?

Beetlejuice (movies)

Requested characters: Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz, Delia Deetz, Astrid Deetz

I'm open to somethat that just features Beetlejuice and Lydia, or something that just features Lydia and Delia, or something that just features Lydia and Astrid if you would rather write that than something with all four characters.

I saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on the big screen recently with no real expectations, but I loved it so much! Maybe even more than the original, because it was so much less cruel, especially in its treatment of Delia. I've always felt that, all things being equal, she as an oddball artist would have been a natural ally to Lydia the weird goth girl with a penchant for photography. I also like that Beetlejuice was significantly defanged in terms of how menacing he seemed and he was borderling sweet at points. Honestly, Lydia's scumbag fiance being a more realistic kind of terrible makes old BJ come off like a prince in comparison. She could, and did, do a lot worse! Which is all to say, I am very happy to receive shippy Beetlejuice/Lydia fic, although feel free to not go that route if you'd rather write something gen with them, or a gen fic about Lydia's relationship with either Astrid or Delia. Or both of them! I'm very intrigued by how Lydia's relationship with Delia improved and how it was that they reached the cheerful equilibrium they did in the sequel that wasn't barb-free but was still friendly. Similarly, when did Astrid's relationship with Lydia start to go downhill? Was she maybe more even-handed before her father died, or did she start being resentful once Lydia and her dad separated/divorced? Was she embarrassed about Lydia's paranormal shtick before then, or was it "selling out" that soured her on it? Or maybe did she believe her mom as a kid and get made fun of for it?

Feel free to drop references to other adaptations – I loved the cartoon as a kid and I have approximate knowledge of the musical from my sister who is a big musical theatre fan. If you do go shippy with Beetlejuice/Lydia, I'd prefer if Lydia had agency and the ability to assert boundaries and was actively choosing the relationship as opposed to being tricked or coerced, although I'm not against a "fake marriage to real relationship" sort of thing, or something that starts more dubious and moves to a more equal playing field.

Kaos

Requested characters: Caeneus, Eurydice "Riddy", Ariadne "Ari", Dionysus

I am open to a fic that just features Caeneus and Riddy, or one that just features Ari and Dionysus or one that is about any of the requested characters invididually.

I loved this show so much! I feel like it's so hard to adapt Greek mythology in a way that feels fresh at this point, given how many centuries worth of interpretation and reinterpretation have been going on at this point, but it had me in the palm of its hand from start to finish. I have been saying for ages now that I want a version of Ariadne who genuinely loved her brother instead of aiding and abetting his murder (justice for the minotaur!). And the idea of a Eurydice who just isn't that into Orpheus is inspired! What does it mean to be the object of someone's undying loyalty when that comes at the expense of being the subject of your own narrative? Caeneus as a former Amazon who had to leave after coming out as trans was a very rich vein to mine too, and I really liked Dionysus as just sort of a nice (by the standards of the gods) guy who likes people, which seemed very appropriate for a god with his particular domain. The nod at the end of the series to his relationship with Ariadne in the myths was also very fun! I'd love if you wanted to write a fic where they met. I also adore Caeneus and Riddy's relationship and I think that's rich with the potential for something deliciously angsty, or maybe something more fluffy as a missing scene when they are in the underworld together? I also would really love to read a character study of any of the characters I have requested. Their backstories are so intriguing and canon has left a lot of room to carve out discrete moments in their past in a fic.

Dear podficcer,

I’m [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver/[twitter.com profile] unmanlygrief/[personal profile] obstinatecondolement/[tumblr.com profile] obstinatecondolement. Thank you so much for offering one of my fandoms! I’m very excited to see what you make.

I don’t have a preference regarding podfics with or without effects and music, so feel free to do whatever you would prefer. I generally take a long time listening to podfics longer than 10–30 minutes, because I get antsy and lose focus unless I have something to do with my hands—I don’t want to discourage you from making something longer if you want to, but I thought I’d just let you know about this upfront, so that if you did make a longer podfic for me, you weren’t worried that I didn't like it if it took me a while to listen to it in full and let you know how much I liked it. Regarding other preferences, everything I’ve said in this letter is extremely optional and I’ve only included what I have to give people who like a jumping off point some guidance into things I enjoy. Feel free to ignore whatever you don’t vibe with and read as much or as little of this as you like.

Requests

Requested Fandoms (be wary of spoilers!)
Beetlejuice (movies)I recently saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) and am extremely invested in this universe again. I do ship Beetlejuice/Lydia, but you don't have to pod something shippy if that's not your bag. I'd prefer fic where Lydia was not a teenager and not something that's just flat out non-con, but you don't have to shy away from Beetlejuice being skeevy and gross.
DiscworldI have been a fan of the Discworld novels since I was about 10 and I love them to distraction. I am especially fond of the witches books, but I also really like the characters in The Truth (I tend to ship Otto Chriek/Sacharissa Cripslocke/William de Worde fwiw) and Monstrous Regiment. I prefer Maladict from Monstrous Regiment to be interpreted as transmasc or non-binary as opposed to a cis female character. I'm not a big Vimes/Vetinari fan, and I'd prefer not to get podfic where that was the main thrust of the story.
Sense8I’m possibly in the minority in that I really loved how Amor Vincit Omnia fit so much plot into the runtime of a single movie. I don’t love that it was necessary, but I really enjoyed the implications of the result, where the various sensates loved ones had to be looped in (often offscreen) and were immediately ride or die. Love that! Devotion is never not going to get me. Along with what seems like the majority of the fandom, I am obsessed with Kala Dandekar/Rajan Rasal/Wolfgang Bogdanow and I really, really love how neat Rajan and Wolfgang think the other is when they meet. All those scenes where Kala is having a crisis about how she could possibly choose between them and the sad necessity of breaking the heart of a good man no matter what she does and Rajan and Wolfgang are staring dreamily into each other’s eyes in the background and skimming stones across a lake while holding hands are just *chef’s kiss*
Star Trek: Lower DecksI'm behind on or have not watched any of all of the new Star Trek shows except for Lower Decks. I feel like it's such a loving entry into the canon with such great respect for the franchise, for all that it has a very comedic tone and is quite different from everything that's come before it. I love how Mariner cares So Much and masks it with cavalier devil-may-care attitude but that she can't help but be earnest. I love how the characters are genuinely such good friends and they love each other so much! I have said before that I think Lower Decks is the horniest and also the least romantic Star Trek, in the sense that you could very plausibly imagine nearly any two characters having a friends with benefits thing, but it's not particularly hung up on romantic relationships and the focus is more on friends and family (and found family).
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among ThievesThis is another thing that I feel is very silly and comedic, but deeply earnest and sincere in how it respects its source material. I really love the ensemble cast in this movie and something about any of them would be amazing. My only caveat is that I don't ship Simon/Doric (althought I'd be fine with something where they tried to date and it didn't work out because they worked better as friends).
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyI've been a fan of the radio show and books since I was a child. I am a fan of Ford/Arthur, if that's something you'd be interested in, but something gen would also be great. I am an And Another Thing refusnik, so I'd prefer not to have something that had references to events in that novel.
KaosI felt like this was such a fresh take on a lot of the Greek myths they were drawing on, which is increasingly hard to do given how widely adapted and homaged the classics are. In particular, Riddy not being in love with Orpheus anymore was such an interesting and bold choice! I also really like how it didn't shy away from elements of mythology that often get elided for modern sensibilities, like Hera being Zeus's sister, or casual infanticide, etc. I haven't read any fic as of yet, but I really like Riddy/Caenis in the show, and I love Kaos' take on Ariadne (and the Minotaur!) and I think an Ari/Dionysus thing could be great (loved the nod to their potential future relationship in the show too). Something with general worldbuilding of the show's interpretation of Krete, or the Trojan War, or something else, would also be great.
Only Murders in the BuildingI love this intergenerational crime fighting friend group so damn much. I haven’t read a lot of fic, so I don’t know what is out there to pod, but I really ship Mabel Mora/Theo Dimas, Charles Hayden Savage/Oliver Putnam (I can really see them both being closeted up til now with varying degrees of self awareness about it, from Charles being like “Well, I’ll just not think about that” to Oliver never really thinking twice about it because he thinks everyone is a bit bi). I also like Mabel/any of her canonical love interests. I think this is a great fandom for a gen fic though, because it’s a mystery show about friendship. It would also be a fun one to pod, potentially, since it’s centred around the character’s creating a podcast!

Dear Festividder,

Hi! I'm obstinatecondolement, or [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver on AO3. It's that wonderful time again! Thank you so much for offering one of my requested fandoms.

I'm pretty easy to please, so please do feel free to take as little or as much guidance from anything I've written here as is helpful, and I'm more than happy to be surprised.

Other notes regarding vid preferencesThere aren't any genres of music that I actively dislike and if you get the vibe that I would like something based on the things I have listed above, and it's not a DNW, then you're probably right. I often enjoy vids set to covers of well-known songs, so that would be really cool. I don't listen to a huge amount of instrumental music, but I do enjoy it! Also feel free to vid something to a non-music audio source, such as poetry. I also don't mind dialogue in vids, but I prefer that it's over instrumental sections of the music with no lyrics, that there is no audible music from the source's score, and that the volume of the song the vid is set to is adjusted so that the dialogue isn't fighting with it.

DNWs
  • Vids set to music by Michael Bublé or Taylor Swift
  • Footage of rats
  • Sustained strobing or flashing throughout the vid

Requested fandoms
Porridge (1974)I've been on a big Porridge kick for about a year now. I love how it marries silly sit-com antics with things that are genuinely deeply tragic if you think about them even a little and the shows unrelenting scepticism of The System and its refusal to concede that the character are not playing a rigged game. I do also consider it to be the deeply touching story of a 23 year old first offender and his mission to fuck his middle aged cellmate, but you do not have to indulge me on this and I'd be more than happy with a gen vid. A character study or an ensemble vid could both work really well, and you could go funny or serious to equally great effect. Or both!
Watership Down (Animated Film 1978)

I have loved this movie my whole life. The animation style is so beautiful and the characters are all so distinct and interesting. I love how weird and offputting Fiver can be, and there's something about a rabbit that's psychic that just really seems right. Hazel as the capable but unglamorous leader, Bigwig as the disgruntled but deeply loyal heavy, Blackberry's cleverness, all of the Watership Down rabbits who I could go on about for paragraph upon paragraph. And Kehaar! Beautiful Kehaar with his loyalty to the "stupid bunnies" who saved him and how he is so foreign to them but still a firm friend of the warren. And, oh my god, Hyzenthlay, my best friend Hyzenthlay. I love her and how she stands up to Woundwart, but in a very measured and political way that doesn't come off like a shallow attempt to write a girlboss. I also love how she is almost the midpoint between Hazel with his calm leadership and Fiver with his visions. I also really love her relationship with Bigwig and how they work together to organise the escape from Efrafa.

I also just really love the worldbuilding in this movie and how lapine religion and mythology is so deeply real and present in-universe. It captures how precarious and brutal the lives of these prey animals are, but in a way that really centres how they see both the world and themselves. They are at the mercy of strange and unfathomable forces, but they are the heroes and they never give up. All the world will be your enemy, prince of a thousand enemies, and if they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you!

Supacell (TV 2024)

This show was such a surprise to me and I wholeheartedly recommend watching it if you haven't already, even if you're planning on vidding one of my other recommendations, if only because I want more people to talk to about it, haha. The worldbuilding is so cleverly conceived and the characters are all so grounded and real in a setting with superpowers and sinister hooded figures acting as bounty hunters for mysterious evil organisations.

I love all of the main characters and the ways they clash and contrast, and their ties to friends and family outside of each other—Sabrina's sister Sharleen, Tazer's grandmother and the other Tower Boys, Michael's fiancee Dionne, Andre's son AJ, Rodney's friend Spud—being what ultimately leads them to work with each other. Some kind of ensemble vid would be amazing, but you could zoom in on one character, or on one relationship, and that would also be so effective.

The Tick (2016)

So, fun fact, this is the fandom that got me to start vidding, haha. I was trying to put a playlist together and it wasn't going anywhere but I knew that I wanted to do Something with one song in particular, so I decided to give vidding a go on an impulse. Needless to say, I am very fond of this fandom

I really love how earnest the show is, despite it being comedic. It's so refreshing, even eight years after it came out, to see a superhero show that isn't cringingly embarrassed that it's a superhero show.

I love Arthur's arc and the way the show deals with mental illness and trauma, and I also really love his relationship with the Tick. Dot is such a deep well of characterisation and I think her season two plotline where she comes into her own after spending most of her life trying to look after Arthur is amazing. Overkill is also fantastic and I love how his gritty antihero shtick is undercut and clowned on several times, but his trauma never is even when elements of it are presented comedically (YMMV, though, I suppose). I also find his relationship with Dot very compelling. I think there's so many ways you could do a vid for this fandom: it could be campy and silly, it could be sad, it could be around a theme like loss, or heroism, or it could be focused more on a single character study, or a relationship, or relationship(s). There's a lot of scope!

The Tick [Umbrella]

It's really interesting to me how unique The Tick is as a superhero franchise in that all its different iterations, which are all so different in tone, have had the creator Ben Edlund at the wheel. It can be gritty or cartoony, cynical or sincere, adult or kid-friendly, but it's all still Ben Edlund's The Tick. I think that it is a fascinating lens to look at where the superhero genre was at at the time of each adaptation—what was being satirised and what did that reflect? There is also something interesting to me about how the Tick himself is kind of a mystery. He's not a Superman or a Batman type figure with a coherent origin story or a secret identity, he exists in each story to be The Tick.

Some Like it Hot (1959)I'm so deeply in love with this movie. I probably know it word for word, shot for shot, but I still laugh at all the jokes and scream at all the same things every time I see it. I love how it's both silly and zany but also quite sweet and sensitive. I also do absolutely read it as a trans movie. As my youngest sibling recently said of Daphne, "Transition did save her. From the mob, but also in general."
Singin' in the Rain (1952)This movie is both another all time personal favourite, but one I think is incredibly viddable with all its gorgeous dance numbers and fun facial expressions to cut to. I really love that it's a movie about movies (and a musical about musicals). Maybe it's growing up on The Muppet Show, but any kind of story with an on-stage and off-stage element to it really speaks to me. I think that basically any of the characters would be so fun to centre a vid around, but something shippy (Kathy/Don, Kathy/Don/Cosmo, Don/Cosmo, onesided Don/Lina, the list goes on), or something with the whole ensemble, or something about putting together a movie/showbusiness, etc., would all work really well
Star Trek: Lower DecksI am so enraptured with Lower Decks. I love how it is so fond of the franchise and respects it so much while still being very silly and both more overtly comedic and horny on main (this is a family show, Gene!) than its predecessors. The characters might be 2D animated, but they are never flat and, again, the comedic tone of the show never robs any of them of being more than just funny. In particular, I love how Beckett tries to rougish and devil-may-care, but she cares so much, and her arc relating to her relationship to the institution of Starfleet and its ideals. This is another one where you could go in so many different directions and tones and all of them would work really well. You could do something funny, something serious, something that's both, a character study, something around a theme, an ensemble vid.

Dear vidder,

Hi! I'm obstinatecondolement, or [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver on AO3. Thank you so much for offering one of the fandoms I've requested! I can't wait to see what you make :D

Apologies for being a bit slow off the mark in posting my letter! I obviously am not going to expect you to have seen this when it was still a placeholder when the assignments went out, so while I have some DNWs listed below, I understand that it's more of a suggestion than anything.

Also, please feel free to take as little or as much guidance from anything I've written here, and I'm more than happy to be surprised. I have not picked specific characters or relationships for any of the fandoms I've requested in my sign up, and I'd love for you to go with whatever approach that appeals most to your creative impulses if something really grabs you, whether it's something I've mentioned here or not.

Requested fandoms
Dogma (1999)I was obsessed with this movie when I was an edgy 13 year old with an ambivalent relationship to religion and I retain a lot of fondness for it. I didn't select any characters or relationships in particular and I'd be very happy for you to go in whatever direction you wanted with this, whether it was more focused on Bethany and her journey (including her canonical death and resurrection), or Rufus, or Loki and/or Bartleby's lives/deaths and relationship to God or wanting an end to their punishment, or Azrael's slant on that for that matter!
Interview with the Vampire (TV 2022)

This show has me deep in its clutches currently. I feel like you could go in so many different directions for the theme with this one and they'd all be great. Whether you went with a more literal interpretation and did a character study of one of the undead characters, or an ensemble vid about vampiric existence, or if you wanted to go with something along the lines of the "after life" of Lestat as a hallucination after Claudia and Louis "kill" him, or Daniel's near-death and then life after he met Louis and Armand in San Francisco.

I would also love to see a Claudia character study vid because the way she's frozen in puberty and alienated from the living and the dead alike is endlessly compelling and tragic to me in ways I cannot get enough of.

The one thing I'd mention as a "probably not" here is that I'm not a fan of Armand (I don't dislike him, I just don't find him very compelling), so a solo-Armand vid might not be the best use of your time and effort.

The Umbrella AcademyThis is another great fit for the theme and I think there's a lot of different angles you could take on it. Either Klaus and his relationship to death/the dead/dying, Ben and his post-death existence as a ghost, Number Five who saw the whole world die and who was dead to his family for years, any and all of the Umbrella Academy and their lives after various deaths/losses.
Ghosts (TV 2019)I'd love to see something for this fandom! You could do almost anything here and have it be on-theme, given that the majority of the main cast are ghosts, but I think that something specifically about Allison, who died and can now see ghosts, would be interesting, or about Robin remaining for so many thousands of years after he died and growing so accustomed to loss that it makes him seem even more inhuman to the others than not being a modern homo sapien does, or the Captain growing to accept himself in death where he couldn't in life. Or, y'know, something fun and silly! Don't feel obligated to do something maudlin by any means, I mentioned those examples mainly just to give you some options in case you wanted scope beyond silly and funny.
Ghosts (US TV 2021)I know some people have a very firm preference re: the UK or US versions of Ghosts, but I feel that both do different things very well. The US show is a lot more sentimental and less cynical and it develops the characters more as opposed to having them mostly static as they were at the moment of death, and I think there is a lot of value in both approaches. Given that the US show does emphasise character growth for the ghosts, something about being able to do things in death that you couldn't in life, or learning and growing in ways that you could't when you were alive would be very interesting. I do ship Trevor/Hettie and I would never say no to something along those lines, but it's not essential. I'm not hugely shippy about Isaac/Nigel, so I'd prefer not to have something that was mainly about their relationship, but including shippy Isaac/Nigel elements in a vid more broadly about Isaac, or about him accepting his sexuality, or in an ensemble vid, etc., would be more than fine. Again, I don't dislike the ship, I just don't find it particularly compelling on its own merits.
Bill & Ted (Movies)The boys! Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted Theodore Logan, my beloveds. I don't think there is anything you could do with this franchise in a vid that I wouldn't be on the edge of my seat to watch. I love all three iterations in the trilogy and whether you went with something more literal along the lines of their canonical deaths and resurrections or something more thinky about the future in the Bill & Ted universe, or their wives' lives hundreds of years after they would have died otherwise, or the lives of historical figures seeing the future (which includes Bill and Ted themselves in the context of the movies), anything would be fantastic.
The Mummy (Movies 1999-2008)I'm a millennial bisexual, so it's basically mandatory for me to be obsessed with these movies. I think that there is so much scope for things on both the silly and the serious ends of the spectrum that would be on theme for the challenge (bonus points if you could hit both extremes in the one vid, like the movie itself does). I think that there's something to be teased out in the implicit cloud WWI throws over several of the characters and their attitudes to life and death, but I'm not sure how the best way to get that across in a vid would be.
ダンジョン飯 | Dungeon Meshi | Delicious in DungeonI am an anime-only fan, so I don't know what's coming down the line beyond what has been adapted so far, but I love this story so much! I love how much of a focus there is on environmentalism and the importance of both good food and a good relationship to food and living/persisting. Death and life are so intertwined in the show from the larger stakes with resurrecting Falin, but it exists in the smaller stakes of killing to eat and death feeding life. I am also intrigued by Marcille's anxieties about outliving her friends, which I suspect also inform the Mad Mage's motivations. I'm very pro-her using forbidden magic to resurrect her gf, but I'm also deeply compelled at the idea of how a desire to preserve life can potentially be perverted.

Dear author,

I am [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver on AO3. Thank you for offering one of my fandoms! I'm excited to see what you write.

Except for DNWs, everything I’ve said in this letter is extremely optional and I’ve only included what I have to give people who like a jumping off point some guidance into things I enjoy. Feel free to ignore whatever you don’t vibe with and read as much or as little of this as you like.

I’ve structured things here so that you can jump around it easily and only read the parts that are relevant to you, so do not feel obligated to read the whole thing.

SFW likes
  • Fic that is largely canon compliant. Canon divergent AUs are great, fic that re-interprets or re-examines canon events with a different lens is also great. I am not especially reverent towards canon and non-canon compliant fic is not a problem, but I do really like fic that rattles the bars of its canonical confines while remaining within them (or stays within them for the most part). See also:
    • Post-canon fic and prequel fic—especially ones that are:
      • Character studies, especially of characters who are sparsely characterised or underutilised in canon.
    • Missing scene fic.
  • Fic with a strong ensemble cast.
  • Dramatic irony, especially when it’s comedic.
  • Witty or otherwise humorous dialogue.
  • As you can probably tell from the last two listed likes, I prefer fics with a comedic tone, or at least a comedic tinge (which can be ironic and/or bitter, in fics that skew more towards the dramatic side of the comedy-drama spectrum). I like pretty dry and understated humour, but I am also just a fan of Funny more generally.
  • Bittersweet or melancholy fics are also wonderful. I am always a sucker for regret and missed opportunities/wasted time.
  • Quiet, domestic stories.
  • Exciting, dynamic stories.
  • References to queer culture and history. This can be in conjunction with one or more queer ships, but can also be in a gen fic featuring one or more queer characters.
  • Pining.
  • Polyamory/non-monogamy, very much including forms of non-monogamy other than polyfidelitous triads, such as vee arrangements, polycules or open relationships etc.
  • Emotionally intense and tempestuous co-dependent relationships, which can either get healthier over the course of the narrative or remain very much a "don’t try this at home" kind of depiction.
  • Kid fic.
  • Knitting or other kinds of crafts, especially from authors who are crafters and especially-especially when it includes technical or jargon-y details.
  • Speaking of jargon, I love STEM-y things being featured in fic.
  • I also love wildly unrealistic and campy fake science escapades.
  • Things relating to ageing.
  • Stuff about (wanted) pregnancy. Can be along the fluffy side or the kinky side.

NSFW likes
  • Getting together and/or stuff with a first kiss (I know, how NSFW, lol) or first time having sex. I particularly like if first time sex scenes (and sex scenes generally) aren’t Perfect™ and things are a little awkward in a way that the characters can laugh about.
    • First time bottoming and, more generally, first time doing X sex act or kink and/or characters realising that something they hadn’t given much thought to, or had assumed they wouldn’t be into, is something they’re really into. I’d prefer they go into it with a “Sure, I’ll try anything once” attitude rather than an “I’ll suffer through it for you 😥” attitude.
  • Friends with benefits/platonic sex. This can turn into fuckbuddies-to-lovers, but it doesn’t have to. I am particularly partial to a character who wingmans for their fuckbuddy and gets them together with another love interest (whether or not the two friends continue to have platonic sex afterwards is fine either way).
  • Non-penetrative sex.
    • Intercrural sex specifically. This can transition into penetrative sex or not.
    • Oral sex of all varieties.
  • Virginity kink, even/especially if the fic itself doesn’t buy into the social construction of virginity as a concept.
    • Re: the above, I really it like, in general, when a work winks at the idea that kinky elements are just roleplay and not Real. Not for moralistic reasons or anything, I just think it gives a nice atmosphere and feel to the relationship and dynamic between the characters to imagine them being kinky together on purpose, as opposed to fics that play to the kink, but are not explicitly written to portray the characters as kinky, if that makes sense. I've heard this described as diegetic kink, which I think is a fun term for it. I don’t mind if this is not something in play though, and I can definitely tell the difference between id-heavy smutty fan fiction and writing intended to be taken as a strictly literal account of how things are or should be done, if you find it clunky to write in-universe scenes.

DNWs

I don’t mean to imply any judgement with any of my DNWs and some of them are things that I do enjoy from time to time in some contexts, but aren’t things that I’d like as part of a gift work/that I’m in a headspace for right now.

SFW DNWs
  • First or second person narration, unless that is canon typical.
  • Mundane/modern AUs (e.g. college or coffee shop AUs, etc.)
  • Harry Potter AUs/fusions
  • Pregnancy related DNWs:
    • Unwanted pregnancy.
    • A character being coerced or tricked into becoming pregnant, even if they come around to the idea and/or are not upset by it (babytrapping from the side of the gestational parent isn’t a problem for me, because it’s a bodily autonomy thing for me mainly and also I’m a hypocrite).
    • Pro-life sentiment/politics endorsed by the narrative.
    • Abortion or miscarriage (re: the apparent contradiction with the last bullet point, for me this is like “there was only one bed” fic where they resolve it with someone sleeping on the couch, because I like pregnancy fic and the kind I seek out start from a premise that the pregnancy is wanted, even if unplanned).
  • Dark fic. I’m fine with angsty or bittersweet fic or with stories that are framed as tragedies, but I do not want something that is primary intended to be disturbing, or that is unrelentingly miserable with no reprieve and no catharsis at the end.
  • A strong focus on bigotry. You do not have to engage in historical revisionism or erase bigotry that exists in canon or the real world and I do enjoy fic that engages with the broader social contexts of various fandom settings, but I would prefer this wasn’t the primary focus.
  • Fetishisation or romanticisation of a marginalised group. For example: race play, fetishisation of trans people, fat fetishism, fetishisation of physically disabled people’s bodies, romanticisation of mental illness, etc. One exception is that I do have a weakness for clueless class privileged characters who are poverty tourists, à la the song Common People, so I will say that I’m generally neutral-to-positive on this one, provided the character whose socioeconomic circumstances are being romanticised explicitly thinks that the poverty tourist is being a privileged dick, regardless of whether they also still have, or want to have, sex and/or a relationship with them.
  • Intimate partner violence or other related forms of abuse.

NSFW DNWs
  • Non-con
  • Consensual non-consent or other rape fantasies.
  • 24–7 D/s relationships.
  • Master/slave relationships.
  • Degradation kink.
  • Desperation kink.

Requests

I have included some suggestions for prompts and a handful of fandom-specific DNWs below.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Requested relationships:

  • Kira Darvis & Xenk Yendar
I really want to see what Kira would think of Xenk. I imagine that she’d be disposed to like him, if only to be contrary to her father, and that he would treat her very seriously in a way that I think she’d appreciate because I don’t think Xenk condescends to children. Or at least no more than he does to everyone else.
  • Solo: Themberchaud
Themberchaud, my beautiful chaotic evil son! I was so worried that they were going to kill him and was extremely relieved when they didn’t manage it.
  • I'd be very interested to see a fic that includes stuff about his backstory, specifically about his past in Gracklstugh and how he came to escape it and be in Dolblunde by the events of the movie. Is he still allied with the duergar? Does he still do any smithing? Has he retired to sleep on his hoard all day and set fire to people who annoy him? I am equally happy to read a fic that has a blank slate take on the character though!

  • Solo: Xenk Yendar
I am violently in love with Xenk Yendar and would die for him. I love that he is so relentlessly earnest and kind, but also kind of a little stinker (see: him smirking when Edgin whispered that he hated him).
  • I read him as autistic, but I wouldn't necessarily use our-world terminology given the setting (although, that said, I think with TTRPG settings you can brazen out a Fantasty Costco here and there, so if you wanted to then go wild), so if you were drawn to that kind of reading of the character it might be fun to see him getting into various special interests, or having hyper or hyposensitivity that lead to him being sensory averse or sensory seeking (could be both in different contexts), or an autistic take on his strong sense of justice, etc.

I'm also very interested to read a pre-canon fic about him growing up after fleeing Thay and how he came to be a Paladin. How does he feel about the ways he's been changed by exposure to necromantic magic? Does he dwell on it much? Is he ambivalent when it’s helpful, e.g. his ability to see in the dark? Does he get close enough to others to feel conflicted about his extended lifespan, or is he too alienated as a Thayan to have lost many close friends? Is this something he is now grappling with after meeting the party?

  • Edgin Darvis/Xenk Yendar
I am so here for this ship. I love how wearily defeated Edgin seems to be by Xenk’s Goodness and sincerity. As a cynical son of a bitch with low self esteem whose chief weapon is a cleverness with words, I can think of nothing more disarming and frustrating than handsome, heroic Xenk Yendar who completely refuses to engage in verbal sleight of hand and keeps telling you that you're a good person who will do the right thing. I love this for Edgin.
  • Something post-canon where they get together would be great. It would be interesting to see how aware they both are of their own feelings and whether or not they are reciprocated. I can very easily see both of them being like "Well, obviously I'm down to clown, but he's not so nothing's going to come of it and that's fine" and then one or both of them casually says this and they are both like. Ah. Or maybe something where they are not entirely sure how to untangle sexual attraction from emotional attachment. Maybe one seems okay but the other is unthinkable, and which is which could differ between them?

  • Edgin Darvis & Kira Darvis
I'd love to read a fic where Edgin and Kira get to know each other again. It could be a little bittersweet with both of them trying not to think too hard about the time lost, or maybe Kira still has some lingering feelings about Edgin leaving her behind that are unresolved. I could see that even after knowing Forge had lied to her it would be hard to just Stop feeling some of the resentment that had become baseline for her. It doesn't have to be sad or fraught though! Something that's purely funny or cute would be very good too.
  • Edgin Darvis & Holga Kilgore
The rare "they're just friends, don't be gross" relationship where I'm fully on board with a strictly platonic reading! I adore Edgin and Holga's devotion to each other and how comfortable they are in being Messes around each other or even mean and prickly. They are certain of each other in a way that can let them take each other for granted sometimes, which is both touching to me and does also make me want to see them remember to be nice, haha. A fic where Edgin is doing the emotional heavy lifting of supporting Holga (maybe after her divorce?) would also be great because he does lean on her a lot in canon.
  • Solo: Doric
As a Fantasy High fan I was so excited when Doric wildshaped into an owlbear for the first time that me and my sister just kept shouting "Hoot, growl! Hoot, growl!" at the screen for the full duration of the scene. I love that she's so powerful and that tonally she's living in an entirely different story to everyone else a lot of the time.
  • I'm intrigued by how she conceptualises her own identity as a culturally elvish tiefling born to humans who rejected her. She seems very integrated into her community and unconflicted about her place in it, which is not always typical of "between two worlds" characters. If a human relative other than her parents wanted to reconnected, such as a sibling, would she entertain that? Does she have any wood elf step siblings? Who are her peers in the Emerald Enclave growing up? How connected is she to being a tiefling outside of her relationship to her human family of origin and her adopted wood elf family? Does she know any other tieflings?

I tend to read her as a lesbian, but don't feel married to that interpretation if you don't. I would prefer you didn't write shippy fic with her and Simon, although a fic about them trying to make it work and realising that they were better as friends would be cool.

  • Doric & Xenk Yendar
I feel like Doric and Xenk are probably the most earnest characters in the movie and I'd be interested to see how they relate to each other one-on-one. They are also both characters who are, for want of a better way of putting it, from human backgrounds but who are distanced in some way from that. Xenk's was changed by his brush with the beckoning death, Doric is a tiefling whose biological parents are human, and both of them were estranged from their biological parents. Do they think about these parallels? Has one of them but not the other?
  • Doric mentioned Xenk having helped the Emerald Enclave defeat the Clerics of Talos—was she there at the time, maybe as a child? She said she'd heard of him rather than that she'd met him, but did she maybe see him in passing? Maybe she would have related to his story. Possibly they had a very brief interaction that she doesn't think he'd remember, but then he does.

Fandom specific DNWs:

  • Shippy Simon/Doric.

Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

Requested relationships:

  • Mary Bennet/Anne de Bourgh
I have always felt quite sorry for Anne de Bourgh being stuck in Rosings with her mother all the time and not having the opportunity of society beyond visitors, who it doesn't seem like she has much say in either. It also must be a bit of a blow to her ego that, vast fortune aside, her mother seems to think the only person who could be prevailed upon to marry her is her cousin, and only then out of a sense of family duty to his own late mother. Mary, by contrast, sort of shuns the social opportunities she has, which often endears her to modern readers (and it does to me too!) but is a very bad plan from a pragmatic sense for someone due to inherit as little as she is. It's not as dramatic as Lizzie refusing Mr Collins, but Mary won't compromise her happiness for the sake of financial security either, which intrigues me. I think it's not a lot of a stretch to read Mary, with her moralising and lack of social graces and self awareness, as autistic, and Anne is canonically chronically ill, so I'd be interested to see how they would relate to each other as people who are both alienated from others by disability. And in terms of their class differences, would Mary be deferential out of respect for Lady Catherine's rank, like Mr Collins, or would she be awkward and rude? Would Anne enjoy awkward rudeness and a lack of deference as a change of pace?
  • How would they meet? At Pemberley? Is it likely Mary would be invited to stay with the Collinses and visit Rosings Park? Maybe she would live with the Collinses as a governess? I don't know if she would need to take up paid employement after her elder sisters' marriages, but I think she'd be stubborn enough to not want to depend on their husbands. Maybe if she was employed by the Collinses, she would be more inclined to accept the offer of practising piano in Anne's companion's room than Lizzie had been. Would Anne take this amiss?

I think there are a lot of ways you could throw these characters together and a lot of ways they could react to each other that would be very compelling to read about.

  • Catherine "Kitty" Bennet/Georgiana Darcy
Kitty and Georgiana's post-canon friendship is very sweet and I think it would take on a shippy dynamic very readily. And since Kitty living in Pemberley after her father's death (not that you have to kill Mr Bennet!) would be quite unremarkable, as would Georgiana living with her brother if she remained unmarried, it would be relatively easy for them to live together. Georgiana's wealth would also maybe make a little cheeky lesbianism less socially unforgiveable, à la Anne Lister, and potentially they could perhaps be semi-open about a relationship, or at least more indiscreet than if they were not insulated by class privilege.
  • Georgiana is such a Good Girl and quite shy compared to Kitty's puckish shamelessness and I'm interested to see how they took to each other so quickly given that they are so different. Georgiana does have a weakness for rogueishness, given Wickham's attempted elopement with her, so I think she would be very taken with Kitty, for all that she did canonically tame Kitty's wilder excesses (in public anyway).

Pacific Rim

Requested relationships:

  • Raleigh Becket/Mako Mori
It is hard to go wrong with Raleigh/Mako. The deep respect they have for each other and how fascinated they are by each other is endlessly compelling to me. I love all the small things, like how in their Jaeger, Raleigh's fighting stance is different to when he piloted with Yancy, and Mako being surprised that he spoke Japanese.
  • Beyond sparring, how else does their drift compatibility manifest? I would also love to see how they got to relate to each other outside of the context of drift compatibility after the end of the first movie. How are they different and strange to each other? What does it mean to be drift compatible when there's no more need for Jaegers? Does Mako lean on Raleigh in her grief, or does she think that would be too much to assume once they can't touch each other's minds anymore?

  • Solo: Mako Mori
Mako is very much the heart of Pacific Rim for me and I would love to read a character study about her. Even as she honours them, how much does Mako remember of her parents? Does the worst day she had with them overshadow the rest of her memories, or has she been able to hold on to more? What was her schooling like, moving between Shatterdomes? Has she always wanted to pilot a Jaeger, or did the desire grow more slowly?
  • Chuck Hansen & Mako Mori, Chuck Hansen/Mako Mori
I am grouping the & and / version of this relationship together to avoid redundancy here, and I am equally happy either a gen or a shippy take. I have always wondered about Chuck and Mako's pre-canon relationship to each other. Presumably they ran into each other on and off throughout childhood at various Shatterdomes—were they ever friends? Did they have a falling out or grow apart more slowly over time? Mako ran over to kneel down and pet Max when she saw the Hansens, and given that Max is a often read as a symbol for how Chuck and Herc show each other affection despite outwardly finding it hard, this seems significant to me.
  • I think it's not at all unlikely that they have had sex, either with or without romantic feelings involved, and that they have some fondness for each other despite Chuck's hostility toward Mako in the movie and their general amnity. If you wanted to write something post-Chuck's death where Mako reckons with her ambivalent feelings about Chuck, I think that would be very interesting to tease out, but I would equally be happy to read a PWP where they have frenemies-with-benefits thing, or a story about them being childhood friends.

  • Newton Geizler/Hermann Gottlieb
I love these guys and their nasty squabbling and sniping that lies over a deeply profound bond. By the time of the movie they are, effectively, the only peers the other has and the stress and their differing perspectives have made that such a fraught and bitter thing.
  • And yet, they care so deeply for each other! Maybe it is impossible to be honest about how much because they have to be able to work together to fight the Kaiju and if they risked the emotional intimacy of being honest about their feelings then they couldn't do that.

There is also the unavoidable tension of their forced proximity to each other and the fact that they have to work with someone whose metholodologies and hypotheses are completely alien to their instincts, but I think that it's not just a familiarity breeding contempt thing.

Fandom specific DNWs:

  • References to Pacfic Rim: Uprising.
  • Writing Hermann Gottlieb as married.

Three Men and a Baby (1987)

Requested relationships:

  • Sylvia Bennington/Jack Holden/Michael Kellman/Peter Mitchell
Whenever I see this movie I mourn the secret queer polyamorous version of it that exists in my head. I would adore to read a fic about Mary's various parents' relationships to each other. You don't have to have everyone/everyone in the exact same way, and I would really like seeing a less neatly squared away take. Maybe Michael is gay, maybe Peter is primarily interested in Sylvia, maybe Jack bedhops, maybe Sylvia dates other people as well.
  • Given that they are all raising a child together, I imagine that they were all very deliberate about how they got involved with each other and did not want to risk their family bond over evolving their relationships to each other. For Michael and Peter, who have no blood relationship to Mary, I can imagine this was a big factor to consider because a break up going badly could involve losing their daughter, who they have no legal tie to.

Something about their evolving conception of family and how it diverges further and further from the heteronormative nuclear family would be deeply compelling to me.

Feel free to diverge from the sequel, Three Men and a Little Lady, or not according to your own preference.

Challenge #13

Make a rec list! Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think I've mainly recced fics for this challenge, or similar ones, in the past, and I remember regretting not reccing any vids, so I am here now to remedy my past self's oversight there. In no particular order, here are ten vids that I give my strongest possible endorsement to. There are content warnings for several of them that are listed in the AO3 works themselves that I have linked here, but, all other things being equal, I would absolutely recommend that you watch all of them whether you are familiar with the canons in question or not.

Fun, Fun, Fun by [archiveofourown.org profile] cosmic_llin

Fandom: Lower Decks (Beckett Mariner character study vid)
Song: Fun, Fun, Fun by the Beach Boys

This is a Beckett Mariner vid about her relationship to responsibility that [personal profile] cosmic_llin gifted me for [community profile] festivids last year. Full disclosure, many of the vids on this lists were gifts to me, and of those four were gifts I specifically got for Festivids 2022/2023, because it was an absolute banner year for me in terms of both the quantity and quality of vids that were so kindly gifted to me.

It's such a gorgeous, joyous vid that captures so much of what I love about Lower Decks in general and Mariner in particular. It's funny, irreverant, fond, and never afraid to be silly. Llin did a wonderful job with creating a strong narrative in this too about Beckett's relationship with her captain (who is also her mother) and fitting into the structure of Starfleet's hierarchy as an anarchic free spirit who will become a square peg to avoid fitting into round holes out of pique. I love her so, so much.

Get This Podcast Started by [archiveofourown.org profile] findmeinthealps

Fandom: Only Murders in the Building (Mabel Mora & Oliver Putnam & Charles Hayden-Savage ensemble vid)
Song: Get the Party Started by P!nk

This is another vid that was gifted to me last year for [community profile] festivids and was, I think, the first one of the vids I received that I watch post-reveals. It's an ensemble vid and an absolute non-stop riot. Alps is an amazing vidder and, like everyone I've recced here, I could honestly have a rec list of just their work, but to keep things trim I'm limiting myself to this one as an introduction to their oeuvre.

I love humour in vids so much and I think that ironic pairings of clips and lyrics can be so effective, which this vid just absolutely nails. It's also visually such a treat and marries the visuals and the music in such a satisfying way, with so many satisfying little moments that land on exactly the write musical cue, and the editing is as smooth as butter. If you're not familiar with the fandom, I also think it's a great sales pitch for it and what makes it so fun, as it centres on the central trio from the show and their various amateur (and amateurish) murder investigations

Be Okay by [archiveofourown.org profile] cosmic_llin

Fandom: A League of Their Own (2022) (Shirley Cohen character study vid)
Song: Be OK by Ingrid Michaelson

And now for something completely different! This Shirley Cohen vid was another gift that the lovely [personal profile] cosmic_llin made for me for [community profile] festivids last year and it was the second vid I watched. Even hot on the heels of the giddy fun of Get This Podcast Started, I welled up watching this within like a minute. I also cried again rewatching it when I was putting this list together and it hit me every bit as hard.

Llin is the only person who got two vids on the list, but I hope my naked partisanship can be excused here because I think that including both of the vids I've recommended here show her range really well. She's, of course, not unique in being able to nail more than one tone, but she pipped everyone else to the post by giving me two lovely vids last year and I wanted to include all my [community profile] festivids 2022 gifts, haha.

Content warning: discussion of OCD, homophobia and medical abuse

Shirley can be a polarising character, or at least certainly was when the show came out, and in a show that centred and celebrated queerness so much, a character who struggled with homophobia—which, in my reading of her (and I think this is a pretty surface level take, honestly) is a manifestation of her OCD and her obsessions about contamination, and I cannot despite a mentally ill young woman from the 1940s with a "masculine" interest and talent who was terrified of being gay, because it would mean she would "have" to be lobotomised. Shirley also faces the things that terrify her so she can disprove her own fears out of love of her queer friends. I think that honest and compassionate represtations of the less "relatable" and sympathetic manifestations of mental illness, in particular with stuff like OCD, is so important and this vid was just so, so pitch perfect in how it handled its subject matter.

There is a lot of repetition in the song's lyrics and the vid uses this to its advantage by using repeated refrains, in particular, "I just wanna be okay, be okay, be okay" to edit montages of visually similar clips together, often showing Shirley repeating the same compulsive rituals and movements in different scenes. This is so effective and really helps to centre Shirley's point of view and anxieties really solidly at the heart of the vid. And, having established this motif, then transitions away from it in the last section, and instead shows several different instances of Shirley being happy and joyful with her teammates in very visually different scenes over the refrain.

Tubthumping by [archiveofourown.org profile] usuallyhats

Fandom: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (ensemble vid)
Song: Tumbthumping by Chumbawamba

The summary on AO3 for this vid is:

"If the existing plan fails, I make a new plan."
"So you make plans that fail."
"No!"

and... accurate. So, so accurate. I love each and every vid I've ever seen set to Tubthumping, but, truly, I am quite convinced by this one that Chumbawamba had D&D: Honor Among Thieves (2023) in the front of their minds when they were writing this back in 1997.

This is an ensemble vid and it is non-stop laugh a minute fun, very much in keeping with the tone of the movie. I saw this in the room when it premiered in [community profile] vidukon_cardiff last year, and it was a huge crowd pleaser. If you are a fan of plans ganging agley and people getting knocked down and getting up again, I cannot recommend this vid highly enough.

I won't spoil it for you, but the choice of clips for the "Oh, Danny boy, Danny boy, Danny boy" section makes me almost cry laughing no matter how many times I see it.

Pray Be Silent, and Join Me in a Dance by [archiveofourown.org profile] theletterelle

Fandom: Pride and Prejudice (1995) (Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy)
Song Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon, covered by Eric Wuest

Using this instrumental cover of Shut Up and Dance on strings was such an inspired choice for this vid and I am stunned to this day by how effective it is. There are several parts cutting to musicians at the various dances and balls featured in the vid and I find it very immersive. And fun!

'Shut Up and Dance' is also just such a fantastic song choice as-is for a P&P vid, given how much of the stop and start development of Lizzie and Darcy's relationship and their mutual fascination in each other, in all its cautiously spiky glory, involves dancing together and using this almost neoclassical arrangement of it just elevates the vid even further.

I Can Cook Too by [archiveofourown.org profile] Tafadhali

Fandom: Big Eden (Pike Dexter/Henry Hart)
Song: "I Can Cook Too" from On the Town, performed by Alysha Umphress

The last of the recs from my wonderful pile of the Festivids gifts I got last year! This is such a charming and fond little vid for a charming little movie I am so hopelessly fond of. It is just under a minute long, but feels exactly the length that it needs to be.

It centres Pike, the sweet, shy love interest of Big Eden, and his understated, modest courtship of Henry through cooking for him and does such a good job of showcasing Pike as the unqualified dreamboat that he is. Very sweet, very swoony: both the character and the vid.

I Want You to Want Me by [archiveofourown.org profile] hartknyx

Fandom: Much Ado About Nothing (1993) (Beatrice/Benedick, Claudio/Hero)
Song: I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick, covered by Letters to Cleo

Well, the last vid in the list was the last of my Festivid gifts from last year, but this vid is one that I got in Festivids 2020/2021, haha.

I will always hold the Kenneth Branagh adaptation of Much Ado very near and dear to my heart and I was unspeakably thrilled to be gifted this vid by [archiveofourown.org profile] hartknyx. It encapsulates everything I love about this adaptation so perfectly and it's so fun and makes such wonderful use of the physical comedy and delightful facial expressions and acting choices in the film. It's also really effective in how it shows Claudio's deep and profound regret over wronging Hero. I did watch this film very young, so maybe I was softer on Claudio then than I would be on a first viewing now, but I do think that Robert Sean Leonard is one of the more redeemed-in-my-eyes Claudio and I think this section of the vid shows why very well.

It was also such a fun choice to use a song from the 10 Things I Hate About You soundtrack for a vid to another film adaptation of a Shakespearean play! And, as I said at the time, even though there are a lot of repeated refrains in the lyrics, the vid never for one second feels anything but fresh and lively in how it rattles along. It also, as with the P&P vid, uses diegetic elements like showing a character playing a drum over the drum solo section that really, really work and marry the song to the visuals beautifully. Ten thousand out of ten stars, no notes.

Notice Me by [archiveofourown.org profile] lilly_the_kid

Fandom: Cobra Kai (Daniel LaRusso/Johnny Lawrence)
Song: Notice Me by Alexa Ray Joel

It does not matter how many times I see this vid, I fall in love with it again every time. It's so wonderfully adolescent and dumb in its portrayal of these fifty-something-year-old guys who re-light the flame of their teenage karate rivalry with each other almost four decades after the fact and become, once again, completely absorbed by thoughts of each other. Don't pretend you don't see me, baby!

This is just an all time favourite feel good vid for me and I love it to distraction.

Parachute by [archiveofourown.org profile] thingswithwings

Fandom: Leverage (Alec Hardison/Parker/Eliot Spencer)
Song: Parachute by Ingrid Michaelson

I almost cut this from my shortlist a few times, not because it is not phenomenal, but because I wondered whether there was anyone left in fandom who was not already well acquainted with its majesty. This is an absolute classic fanvid that everyone I know who I've mentioned it to, even if they're aren't into Leverage, even if they aren't into vids, has seen and was stunned by. But it will no doubt be new to some of you, so it would be a crime not to include it, and not the fun and morally-just kind of crime.

Parachute is such a wonderfully dynamic and active vid, both in terms of its use of movement through the visuals and its overall narrative arc and how each section flows into the next and progresses the central theme of the vid.

There is this wonderful bit near the start that transitions a section about Hardison and Parker's relationship into including Eliot and his relationships to both of them, where it cuts from Parker and Hardison jumping off a bridge onto a moving train, to Eliot landing in the middle of a brawl in a warehouse. The editing is utterly sublime and it's such a rewarding vid to watch closely every time I go back to it.

Batter Up! by [archiveofourown.org profile] videobaths

Fandom: Succession (Gerri Kellman character study, Gerri/Roman)
Song: Swing! by Ellie Dixon

Gerri alert! And, I mean, okay, do I think Gerri Kellman effectively utilised girl power by funneling money to cover up the worst abuses that occured under Logan Roy's leadership? No, and if she was real I would not be remotely sympathetic to the misogyny she faces as a cog in the machine of late stage capitalism and serving the interests of the richest people in the world. But also... she is a fictional character and she is baby girl and I love her very much and everyone who has ever patronised or overlooked her at WayStar or thrown her under the bus as a scapegoat should be publicly executed for crimes against Blorbo.

This wonderful vid was gifted to me by [archiveofourown.org profile] videobaths for the [community profile] womansplace exchange in 2023 (which I feel very bad about defaulting from and which I hope comes back this year so I can have another crack at it).

The pacing is so effective in this, both in how it builds the momentum of the vid from an excitement per second perspective and also in how it captures the fast pace of the world Gerri operates in and how sink or swim it is to survive in the waters she has been a shark in for decades. It is not constant go, go, go though and has great peaks and valleys in how it handles the pace and the length of each clip to reflect tone in the song.

The lyrics are also just... such a perfect fit for this vid "thought I left the oven on, 'cos your such a gaslight" and "if you're gonna play these games, I'll join in" are just so perfect for Gerri and the narrative thrust of this vid in particular.

The Gerri/Roman shippy sections are also just such an unparalled delight and it is always so fun seeing how actively she chose the awful series of decisions that led to their thing and how into it she is. "Now I'm lucid" oh, girl, are you? But I'm glad you had fun, you deserve it. Not... many of the other particulars that this particular relationship involved, but you deserved the fun part of a thrillingly terrible idea like getting involved with Roman Roy in the manner in which you did.

I pretty much rewatch this vid three times through every time I go back to it because it's so exciting, and it never, ever gets old.

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've just posted the fic I wanted to use to fill this challenge with! I don't imagine it's going to have much broad appeal, since the AO3 tag has all of 11 works, three of which I wrote and two of which were gifts for me, but here it is all the same.

Fandom: Porridge (more specifically the spin-off Going Straight)
Title: I'll Always Feel Just the Same
Relationship/characters: Norman Stanley Fletcher/Lennie Godber
Word count: 7739 words
Warning(s): Homophobia (internalised and systemic), biphobia, systemic inequality, implied past dubiously consensual sex, insecurity about being a financial provider, some ironic in-character disparaging remarks about social welfare, references to prejudice against people who've been in prison/a lack of opportunities to make a living within the bounds of the law after being released from prison.
Summary: Godber catches Fletch trying to sneak out to dig up the field in Essex where he buried ill-gotten gains from his past. Sex and emotional catharsis ensues.

Tell Us about a Personal Win.

Share whatever wins you’re comfortable with telling us all about. Found a new fandom that makes you light up? One of your creations has earned more kudos than you dreamed of? Wins from life, new job, new school, new adventure? You have a couple of wins you want to celebrate, we want to hear about them. Share a win or two so we can cheer for you.

Yesterday, another Porridge fan who is trying to make fetch happen with getting a transformative Porridge fandom going, reached out to me on Tumblr and linked me to a fic they wrote! The fic is called "a certain type of man" and the author who reached out to me is [archiveofourown.org profile] Ebenelephant. The basic premise is that Lennie Godber, one of the show's two leads, comes out to Lukewarm, a canonically gay secondary character, as bisexual. It's really well written, beautifully in-character and evocative of the show in the dialogue. It's very nice to read something with gen with a queer reading of a canon character, as well as something that features a more minor character. While I'm still very deadset on writing whatever I want, whether anyone cares to read it or not, it's nice to not have to make all my own fun in a small fandom in the Yuletide off-season and it's great to meet someone to talk to about the show and the characters.

Since I've mentioned stuff I've been writing though...

As well as various other WIPs I have bubbling away in the background, I am writing another Porridge fic at the moment that has been on the cusp of completion for a few days now, once I can muster up the willpower to knock the sex scene out of the way. I'm not shy about it, or anything, or in any way reluctant to imagine Ronnie Barker getting a good seeing to, but I often find smut kind of a grind to write and I get bored by it easily. I have been reassured by friends that this doesn't translate to the finished product, which still gets the job done, but, having been actively writing fic for about fifteen years at this point, it does just feel pretty staid and routine from behind the scenes, haha.

At any rate, I'm quite happy with how it's working out. It amused me that [archiveofourown.org profile] Ebenelephant had a bit in their fic where Godber mentions David Bowie in relation to bisexuality, because I did that too, haha. The parallel thinking there certainly not at all improbable, given we're in the 1970s here and Bowie is a very relevant cultural reference in discussions of bisexuality in that period, but it's nice that there are now enough of us in the mix that parallel thinking is occuring.

It was my hope to post a link to this still in-progress fic for my response to challenge #11, but it's not quite there yet, so in the mean time:

Challenge #10

Five Things! The five things are totally up to you. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

In no particular order, here's five of my favourite things about Porridge:

  • Ronnie Barker's portrayal of Fletch is just so charming and funny and devastatingly relatable to me personally. He's funny, he's quippy, he's very keen to see if everyone's noticed his funny quips, he's a 'failure' by many conventionally understood metrics of fitting into mainstream society and is defiantly unashamed of it.
  • While it is very punny and gag-heavy, the dialogue is very naturalistic in its delivery and the vernacular it's written in, which feels very lived-in and realistic in a way that more contemporary media with a similar quip-per-minute rate don't to me.
  • While there are certainly aspects of the show that haven't aged great, in my subjective opinion it is a lot less uneasy viewing in terms of bigoted humour compared with a lot of its contemporaries and, even though it has unquestionably racist and homophobic aspects, its portrayal of McLaren, a Black character, and Lukewarm, a gay character, are overall sympathetic and I find them well-rounded and well integrated into the ensemble cast.
  • For a show that has been criticised for sanitising the image of British prisons at a time when they were rife with abuse, it is refreshingly cynical about the criminal justice system and the inequalities that it enforces and perpetuates.
  • Okay, fine, Richard Beckinsale is very pretty and I like to think about him trying his absolute best to shag Ronnie Barker, what do you want from me? I'm not made of stone.
Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale as Norman Stanley Fletcher and Lennie Godber

That's all for now! Hopefully I can circle back on #11 soon with a link to my new hyperniche fic with whatever the opposite of broad appeal is, haha.

This is, um, about a lighthearted sitcom, lol. Oh, which one?

Intro

So my 'new' thing is not really new, either to me or in general, but I have been revisiting the 1970s British sitcom Porridge recently and, having had a lovely windfall of Yuletide gifts and written a couple of my own fics, am now absolutely in its thrall with no clear endpoint in sight. The show is generally remembered fondly by people in the UK and Ireland (and, I think, some other Anglophone countries) who are of an age to have seen it, but there is not much of a transformative fandom presence per se, which, of course, means that I have to do my level best to drag a few of you, who it may or may not be new to, down with me 😉

Porridge stars the late Ronnie Barker in the lead role of Norman Stanley Fletcher, a small-time career criminal who has been sent to serve a five year prison sentence in Slade Prison. This is far from his first time on the inside and, as an old hand, he takes the other lead, Lennie Godber, a young first-offender from Birmingham, played by the late Richard Beckinsale (father of Kate and Samantha Beckinsale), under his wing. Fletch and Godber are cellmates for most of the show, despite Fletch's attempts to finagle a single cell, and many of the scenes are set in their cell and mostly, or only, feature them.

Click for more background on the show

Other characters include:

  • Mr Barrowclough, an easily taken advantage of and ineffectual prison officer.
  • Mr McKay, a more punitive and harsh prison officer.
  • Mr Venables, Slade prison's governor, a tropical fish enthusiast who likes to think of himself as enlightened in his approach, a belief which may or may not be justified.
  • Lukewarm, an affable gay trusty* who knits and lends his dubious cooking skills to the prison kitchen. Jokes are often made about his sexuality, but they are generally not meanspirited, especially when compared with other casually homophobic jokes and language in the show, but this is something to be aware of.
  • Jim "Jock" McLaren, played by a young Tony Osoba, a cagey prisoner who hasn't had many breaks other than the fractured bones he's inflicted on others, but who is generally on good terms with Fletch and Godber and who, under his defensiveness, is pretty easy going. Just to flag this as a 'buyer beware' thing, there are a number of jokes made about McLaren's ethnicity, nationality, and race (his is Black and Scottish, his biological parents being a West Indian woman and a white Scottish man, although he did not grow up with either of them and was "found wrapped up in a copy of the Glasgow Herald in a Greenock housing estate" and grew up in an orphange) which would not fly today and shouldn't have then, as well as outdated terminology that is not (usually) intended offensively, but which is by almost universal consensus considered racist today. Although some of the homophobic language in the show is, arguably, harsher, as they were used as slurs then as well as now, I think the racism in Porridge, both in its treatment of McLaren and in other incidental dialogue, is more overt and harsh than the homophobia.
  • "Bunny" Warren, a prisoner who often goes in on schemes with Fletch and who gets him to read his letters from his wife for cigarettes, since he himself is illiterate.
  • "Genial" Harry Grout, a prisoner who the rest of Slade, inmates and staff alike, lives in terror of and has fingers in many pies relating to blackmarket goods and gambling.
  • Ives, a horrible little man and frequent antagonist who, among other offenses, commits the cardinal sin of stealing from other prisoners.
  • Cyril Heslop, a prisoner who came in with Godber and Fletch who is slow and thoughtful, but not one of nature's great intellectuals, and often several steps behind in a conversation when he chimes in with a contribution.
  • Blanco Webb, a 63 year old prisoner serving a long sentence who is old before his time and who Fletch is very caring toward and reserves most of his sarcasm from.
  • Harris, another horrible little man along similar lines to Ives. As far as I know, the same actor played an almost identical character "Norris" in one of the other episodes, but I may be conflating two different actors.
  • Ingrid Fletcher, Fletch's daughter, who he conceived out of wedlock in Highgate Cemetary on the grave of Karl Marx (he was going through a political phase, and it was as handy a place as any). Ingrid is friendly and cheerful, but a little flakey.

Most of the plots involve harebrained schemes that go awry, like an underground high-stakes game of snakes and ladders, or a pineapple chunks heist. It is very silly and, while aspects of the humour are now dated, a lot of it stands up and I enjoy it a lot. Something I really like about it is that Fletch often repeats jokes in a nudge-nudge-did-you-get-it way, or looks around to see if people are laughing at them, which feels very true to his character, who is very prone to off-the-cuff wordplay and holding forth, and not a little show offish about it. He's very charming and funny and well-spoken, albeit in a way that includes frequent malapropisms, and he clearly bases a lot of his self-esteem on being seen as such. Also, being funny and irreverent is a large part of how he keeps the bastards from grinding him down.

Aside from the aspects of the show that have not aged well that I mentioned above, I really love the humour of the show and I find it very charming. As well as the wacky sitcom shenanigans, the dialogue has a lot of punning and wordplay, largely from Fletch, and the way Barker performs Fletch is extremely winning. A lot of the time he'll repeat jokes in a nudge-nudge-get-it way, or look around to see if people have reacted to a witticism, and I find that just such a lovely and real layer of characterisation. Fletch is rarely serious, often joking, loves playing with language and often holds forth, all of which he is pretty vain and show-offish about and it's clear that being thought of as funny and well-spoken or clever is a big part of his self-image. His irreverance is also a big part of what keeps him sane and stops the bastards from grinding him down, because, while the show is mostly a light hearted take on incarceration that does not really square with the realities of British prisons in the 1970s, at the height of IRA hunger-strikes and at a time rife with human rights violations of prisoners, it is not entirely rosy and uncynical or uncritical about the criminal justice system and prison. There are a lot of elements that focus on how class and marginalisation plays into who ends up in prison and the show is very much on the side of most of the prisoners in Slade over the system that put them in there even if they are as cheerfully unrepentent as Fletcher, although some crimes are framed less sympathetically than theft, notably white collar crime.

*A trusty is a prisoner with special responsibilities and privileges. Also, per the Wikipedia page on the prison trusty system, apparently trusty rather than trustee is the standard spelling, so the more you know, I guess.
[return to where you left off.]

The show has three series and two Christmas specials, two spin-offs—Going Straight, which follows Fletch immediately after he's released from Slade, and a reboot from 2016 where his grandson is the lead, which I have not seen and don't really intent to—a semi-canonical movie from 1979, and a once-off mockumentary set in-universe—Life Beyond the Box: Norman Stanley Fletcher—which came out in 2003.

My crackpot shippy slant on the dynamic between the leads, which is actually very reasonable, how dare you, I don't have to stand here and be insulted like this

Godber: I'm fed up with crime. I wanna go straight.
Fletch: How old are you, son?
Godber: Twenty-three.
Fletch: Twenty-three and you wanna go straight? What kind of talk is that, eh? You've got your whole life ahead of you!

So, yeah, I ship Fletch and Godber, because of course I do. Here is a graphic I made and posted on Tumblr in 2023 when I started rewatching the show:

A collage of featuring several images of the characters Norman Stanley Fletcher and Lennie Godber from the sitcom Porridge, which have been edited to look like Polaroids and superimposed over a background image of exterior of the fictional Slade Prison as seen in the show's opening credits. There are miscellanious hearts and arrows edited onto the image and it is captioned 'Back on my bullshit, 2023' with a smaller caption reading, '*at least I'm having fun, okay?'

This is not a recent development or a revelation I've only had upon rewatching the show, because I also shipped them a LOT when I saw the show first as a teenager. It was, however, extremely arresting (aha) to revisit it and be hit by the shippiness anew. Given my much-touted love of roguish con-men and crooks, and shipping them with wide-eyed younger men who adore them, this is extremely on-brand behaviour from me, to the point where a friend, after I told her that I was rewatching Porridge and having a great time sexualising Ronnie Barker through the proxy of Richard Beckinsale, said, "That makes total sense as a ship for you." A statement which remains the funniest way I have ever been called out in my entire life.

However! In my own defence, I don't think this is shipping goggles forcing a romantic dynamic that may not exist onto two characters who tick enough boxes for me that I'd like to imagine them kissing. I mean it's not not that, but it's not just that. There is, of course, Godber's general open admiration, sometimes almost to the point of awe, of Fletcher, and Fletch's protectiveness over Godber, and their little domestic squabbles and stuff like Godber darning Fletch's socks and nicking tins of pineapple chunks for him at great personal risk, but the first thing that piqued my interest came from their first scene together.

Godber: Know all the form, don't ya? You been here before?
Fletch: No, never been here. But it’s all the same; porridge is porridge innit?
Godber: First time for me. Don't know how I'll get through.
Fletch: Oh, cheer up, could be worse. State this country's in, you could be free, couldn't you? Stuck outside with no work and a crumbling economy. How horrible that would be. Nothing to do but go to bed early and increase the population.
Godber: Won't be doing that for a while.
Fletch: No, that's true, hmm. No, I shouldn't have said that, it's a tasteless joke, innit?
Godber, with an expression like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth: I'm gonna feel ever so deprived.

Like??? I cannot overstate how easy it is to read a lot of scenes in the first few episodes as Godber trying desperately to signal in every way that he can think of that he's up for it to this older, more experienced man who's done time before and has taken him under his wing. Tragically, Fletch doesn't pick up on these hints. I imagine that he hasn't quite got it right yet, per this quote from the pilot:

Godber: Hey, Fletcher, what does he mean by 'practising homosexual?'
Fletch: One who ain’t quite got it right yet.

Ah well, better blatant than latent, but better latent than never, eh? And, like, again, I feel like it is an extremely small stretch to read Fletch, a man who has spent most of his married life in prison and who got married very young to his also-very-young girlfriend after an unplanned pregnancy, as someone who is gay and just hasn't spent enough time outside prison to reflect much on not being that interested in women sexually/romantically.

Fletch, talking to the hens in the prison farm as he steals eggs: Now then, girls. This is what's known as one of the perks of the job. Now, with these eggs I'm smuggling in 'ere, I can get meself a quarter ounce of shag, or two tubes of toothpaste, or... three bars of Fruit 'N Nut! Or I could take them down to E-wing and see Smutty Garland, the king of the porn, exchange 'em for two of his dirty books, yeah, full of full-frontal naked nubiles...
Fletch: I think I'd rather have the Fruit 'N Nut meself.

He also says at various points that 'carnal thoughts' are a bad idea in prison and you should try your absolute best to suppress them—although he also plasters the cell with pictures of topless Page 3 girls, so he's not entirely consistent here, at least on a surface level reading where you do not assume that this choice of decor is performative. I am, however, equally open to readings of him as not gay but otherwise queer and attracted to men, but deeply repressed about it, perhaps in part because of having spent so much time in prison, where there is a lot of homophobic violence and sexual assault, which queer prisoners are disproportionately the victims of. Fletcher himself expresses a lot of casual homophobia, often in the form of jokes about sexual assault, which could just be read at face value as bad-taste homophobic jokes, but could also take on a more sinister undertone if you scratch the surface of it, particularly since Fletch's primary coping mechanism is humour.

Fletch is pretty fond of Lukewarm, who is gay and out, and textually treats Lukewarm's boyfriend on the outside, Trevor, and their relationship as basically equivalent to other prisoners' relationships with their wives, with the only caveat that Trevor also has to worry about Lukewarm having wandering eyes while they're apart, so I don't think he's a unilateral bigot. I do absolutely think he needs some practice to get the hang of one or two things though. As it were.

There are some different options to rent or buy various parts of the canon as well as a few streaming services that have it available in certain regions. What I've been able to find online are the following:

  • Porridge S1-3 (TV 1974):
    • DVD
    • Britbox
    • BBC iPlayer
    • Prime
    • Apple TV
  • The Christmas specials:
    • No Way Out:
      • DVD
      • Britbox
      • Apple TV
    • The Desperate Hours:
      • DVD
      • Britbox
      • Apple TV
  • Going Straight (TV 1978):
  • Porridge (Movie 1979):
  • Life Beyond the Box: Norman Stanley Fletcher (TV 2003):

I also think there were some episodes released on VHS at some point, if you have a VCR. I don't think any part of the canon has been released on BluRay, and as far as I know the 2003 mockumentary is only availabe online on YouTube. It doesn't seem to be on the iPlayer anymore and I don't think it ever got a physical release.

The digital options above may or may not be available in your region and there may be others that I am unaware of.

In terms of the DVDs, you can buy the individual series/seasons by themselves, or in one of a few different boxsets (one with S1-3, one with S1-3 plus the Christmas specials, a few miscellaneous Ronnie Barker DVD boxsets that have some of his other work), but something to bear in mind is the DVDs I've seen online seem to all be Region 2 or Region 4. If you are not in those regions, and you don't have a multiregion DVD player, VLC can usually play DVDs regardless of region if you plug a USB DVD player into a computer in my experience, but I think it depends on the drivers in your DVD player. It may be possible to change the region of your DVD player (although sometimes you can only do this a fixed number of times before it gets locked to one region) or install firmware from the internet that will allow it to play DVDs from any region, or you might also be able to use one of a variety of programs online, such as HandBrake, to rip a region-locked DVD (sometimes with some workarounds if it is not working in a straightforward way, but there are how-to guides that I can put you in the way of it you would like).

For what it's worth though, in my experience a USB DVD drive and VLC will play any DVD I throw at it, which I think is the case for most USB DVD drives and laptop DVD drives, and I've never tried to rip a DVD and then been prevented by region, regardless of the software I used (and I have tried a few), but your mileage may vary and there is a chance you might buy something that you can't play, or can't play without voiding your DVD players warranty or wandering into what you may consider to be legally grey areas (although I believe that ripping DVDs you bought legally for private use is legal in most juridications, which, again, is just my impression and may be wrong). They generally seem to be going fairly cheaply though, so it could be a relatively inexpensive gamble to pick up a single Region 2 DVD to test it out if you felt up for it.

There may be other more dubiously legal methods of seeing Porridge, or its various spin-offs and extended canon, but this is just an observation and not a recommendation, and I certainly would not advise anyone to send me a message asking me to make MP4s from DVDs that I've bought and ripped available to them.

Challenge #7

Make a list of fannish and/or creative resources. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I was struggling with this, because I was thinking mostly of the 'creative' half of the challenge as opposed to more general fannish resources, but I think that refocusing more on the, for want of a better way to put it, 'user' experience of fandom this is a pretty useful list. There are some that are more focused on being a fanwork creator, but they are not craft/creative-focused resources so much as ways to streamline posting to AO3, etc. As a disclaimer, since a lot of this post relates to AO3, I am an OTW volunteer, but I am not speaking on behalf of the OTW in this post and the views and advice are purely my own, and may not reflect those of the OTW as an organisation (and may even be mistaken, if I have misunderstood or misremembered something). Also, I've linked some third-party scripts and extensions that customise the UX and/or UI of AO3, but please note that these are not officially affiliated with AO3 or the OTW and I am recommending them as an ordinary user of the site rather than endorsing them on behalf of the OTW.

That said though, here are some resources:

  1. AO3 search and filtering
  2. Maybe this one is super obvious, but AO3's native search and filtering options are very sophisticated and include options for sorting by kudos/comments/bookmarks/date posted, including/excluding certain tags from your search results, including/excluding crossovers/showing only crossovers, as well as filtering for complete/incomplete works only, works in a specific language, works in a specific word count range, works posted within a specific time period, etc.

If you are not already using filters to refine your search results, and have been frustrated by having to search a long time to find something you're interested manually, upping your filtering game can really help you find exactly what you are interested in much more quickly.

  3. Hidden search operators cheatsheet for AO3
  4. To make AO3's filtering even more sophisticated, you can use these search operators, which will help you get even more precisely filtered results.

  5. Ao3 first tag search by Peter MacDonald
  6. If you are a rarepair shipper who is used to having to look through pages upon pages of search results when you filter for your OTP, because they only appear as a background ship in most of the works they're tagged in, then this is a great browser extension to have installed. When it's enabled, it will add a ticky box on the AO3 search page to only return works where the ship you are searching for is tagged first. Most creators on AO3 tag the 'primary' ship in a work first, so this will mean that most results will probably give you works where your ship is the focus of the work.

You can install it here for Firefox or here for Chrome (I strongly advise switching to Firefox, by the way, but I will not bully you if you don't wanna).

  7. AO3 floating comment box by [tumblr.com profile] ravenel
  8. While I am a big believer in the validity of lurking and the fact that no one owes you a comment no matter how much they liked your work, I do want to get better at leaving comments more often and this script has really helped with that a lot. A big issue for me is that the comment box is at the very bottom of AO3 works and if I want to comment on specific parts there can be a lot of scrolling up and down to copy and paste, or refresh my memory, when I get to writing out my comment. I could keep notes in Notepad or something as I went, but realistically I don't think it's very likely I would remember to do that and even the negligible barrier to entry of opening up Notepad would make commenting seem less approachable and more difficult.

This script really streamlines the process of commenting for me. After you have downloaded and enabled the script with Tampermonkey, you should see a little 'O' in the top lefthand corner of AO3 works you have open. If you click on this, it will open a floating comment box (which you can minimise again without losing your notes) to start writing your comment as you go. If you highlight text in the work and click "Insert selection" it will copy and paste that text into the floating box. If you click "Add to comment box" everything you've written in the floating box will be transferred to the comment box at the end of the page, which you can then mess around with some more, if you like, or just click post. And then you're done! I like this script a lot and it's really opened up writing longer more detailed comments to me.

Here's a post by [tumblr.com profile] ravenel on Tumblr about the script. Here is the script itself on Pastebin. And if you are new to installing scripts with Tampermonkey, [tumblr.com profile] bourbon-ontherocks has a tutorial about how to install this script here.

  9. Muting and blocking on AO3
  10. I was talking to someone the other day who didn't know this, but you can now mute and/or block certain users on AO3 itself, rather than by creating a site skin yourself that hides their content, or using third-party extensions.

From the relevant AO3 News Posts themselves, muting someone will hide:

    • works they've created (or co-created) in search results and tag listings (you can still access the works themselves, if you have a direct link)
    • bookmarks they've created
    • other users' bookmarks of their works or series
    • comments they've left
AO3 News, "Introducing the ability to mute users" Published: 2023-02-06 00:49:38 UTC

    and when you block someone:

"[...] they will no longer be able to comment on your works or reply to comments you've left on news posts or other creators' works. They will also be unable to edit existing comments or replies they've left you.

The block will persist even if the blocked user changes their name."

AO3 News, "Comment blocking is coming" Published: 2022-06-05 00:15:20 UTC (as of 20:59 UTC 10 June 2022 the changes mentioned in this News Post were deployed).
  11. Site skin to hide stats/inbox from dashboard*
  12. I got a bit overwhelmed in 2023 by my relationship to Feedback™/the response a work I posted got, or didn't get, immediately after I posted it, so I turned off emails for comments in my settings on AO3, and created a site skin that hides my inbox on the dashboard and homepage, as well as hiding the comment/kudos/bookmark count on works, and hiding most of the information on the stats page (I kept word count, because that wasn't making me go weird and I like to see it). My intention at the time was to keep the skin on most of the time and toggle it off once a week to respond to any comments and then toggle it back on, to stop getting random spikes of excitement/disappointment based on seeing my inbox, which I did for a while, but now I mostly have it off because I think (for now) I've managed to achieve a healthier relationship with this stuff.

To figure out how to make a skin that did what I wanted it to do, I referred to:

  13. Podfic work skin by [archiveofourown.org profile] Azdaema
  14. Speaking of skins, you can use work skins on individual works you upload to alter their appearance. Sometimes people have work skins that format text messages to look as they would on a phone, etc., and a lot of podficcers use work skins on their podfics, particularly if they have cover art. You do not by any means have to make cover art or use a work skin to post podfic, and plenty of people don't, but if you do want to use a work skin to format your works when you post podfic to AO3, this skin by [archiveofourown.org profile] Azdaema lays things out nicely.

  15. AO3 podfic posting helper by [archiveofourown.org profile] irrationalpie, [archiveofourown.org profile] lastonetheboat, and Jeremy Mowery
  16. It is often common practice when posting podfic to AO3 to copy the metadata tags of the original work, as well as adding some of your own like "Podfic" or "Podfic length: 0-10 minutes" and so on, but doing this manually can be a bit tedious. This browser extension, which is available on Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and some browser I don't know called Source, automatically copies over the metadata from the work your work was inspired by, and, optionally, adds some of your own. You can further customise this in advanced options.

  17. Blanket permission highlighter by [archiveofourown.org profile] BrickGrass
  18. If you are a podficcer, a fic translator, or anyone interested in creating works inspired by other fanworks on AO3, you are probably aware that it is common etiquette to ask permission from the original creator before you do this. Some people have a blanket statement about their transformative works policy—which might be a blanket yes, but could also be a blanket no/yes-for-X, no-for-Y, ask-me-about-Z—for people to refer to instead of having to ask for every individual transformative work they create. This is often, although not always, in their AO3 profile. You can check someone's profile manually, but there is a database of creators with blanket permission statements created/maintained by [archiveofourown.org profile] Rindle and if you install this add-on by [archiveofourown.org profile] BrickGrass, creators on listed on FPSlist will have their usernames highlighted in green on AO3. You can also, optionally, tick a box on the side panel with filters to hide works by creators who are not on the FPSlist, if you wanted to browse through a specific tag quickly to see at a glance what works were created with blanket permission. I found this very helpful when scouting out fic to podfic for ITPE, especially when combining it with using exclusion filters to filter out tags relating to a recipient's DNWs.

  19. Blanket permission builder by [tumblr.com profile] flamingwell
  20. Speaking of blanket permission, if you are a fanwork creator who would like to put together a blanket permission statement but are finding it hard to figure out the ins and outs of what you want to have on there, this tool will help you build and generate one based on your replies to a list of questions. [tumblr.com profile] fanworkspermissionstatement has an FAQ about the tool here and the tool itself can be found here

Since a lot of these ended up to relate to podfic, here's some bonus resouces for the pod-curious who want to dip their toes in the water but are worried about buying expensive equipment or software.

  • Software: Audacity is a free, open-source audio editing software and is the software most podifccers I know use.
  • Mic: your phone or your laptop's inbuilt mic.

That's it! If you have a headset mic, or a Zoom mic or something that you'd like to use instead: use that, but do not go out and spend money on anything before you've recorded a few podfics and decided if you like it. Also, for what it's worth, the audio quality of smartphone mics is very good and some of my favourite pods that I've done were things I recorded on my phone. Also, I've listened to multiple things recorded with inbuild laptop mics and I wouldn't have known if I hadn't been told, and I have a pretty good ear. Challenge #6

In your own space, share a favourite piece of original canon (a show, a specific TV episode, a storyline, a book or series, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

There are so many pieces of media that I have an enduring fondness for and that are large parts of the loose patchwork of quotations that make up my understanding of myself, so it was hard to pick just one. But, if I am narrowing it down to one then...

The Producers

Promotional image for The Producers with the title in lights and the stars Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder against a white background

Edit: The thought belatedly occurs that people might not be familiar with the movie, so I have written a quick summary below. Spoilers ahoy, and content warning for references to Nazis.

Brief plot synopsis

Max Bialystock, a once-great Broadway producer, now reduced to sleeping with his remaining investors, little old ladies, and telling them to make the cheque out to the name of the play (Cash), is visited by a mild-mannered accountant, Leo Bloom, to look over his books. Bloom discovers an irregularity, which Bialystock explains as him spending $500 on a Turkish bath and convinces Bloom to move numbers around to hide the fraud. Bloom, reluctantly, agrees, and concedes that the IRS is hardly going to be interested in auditing a show that flopped. He then is entertained by the hypothetical idea that you could, if you were an unscrupulous man, make more money with a flop than a hit by intentionally raising much more than you needed to stage the play, if you new it was a surefire flop.

Bialystock takes the idea and runs, enlisting Bloom, and they look for the worst play ever written, which they find in Springtime for Hitler.

Despite Bloom's initial hesitation to produce a show written by a former SS-soldier who 'wants to clear the Fuhrer's name,' even with the intention that it will be a catastrophic disaster, they go ahead and buy the rights to the play. They take further pains to ensure their failure by hiring the worst director and actors they can and all seems well, until the play is perceived as a brilliant satire and the show is a huge success, leading to their fraud being discovered.

I saw the 2005 remake of the 1967 original back in the mid-00s and I liked it a lot at the time, but once I got my hands on the original I absolutely never looked back. With all apologies to Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, accept no substitutes: it's Mostel and Wilder or bust for me.

I am incredibly fond of a lot of Mel Brooks' movies, but this one is especially dear to me. I often joke on Tumblr that I have to be sparing with rewatching it, because once I've flipped that switch I am very liable to just watch it every day for weeks and it'll become my entire personality for at minimum a month.

Gene Wilder as Leo Bloom holding a blue blanket to his cheek

I'm Leo Bloom, I'm an accountant, I'm from Whitehall & Marks, I was sent here to do your books, and I'm terribly sorry I caught you with the old lady.

The main reason that I love this movie so much is Gene Wilder's portrayal of Leo Bloom, which, from the moment I first saw it, seemed like it was ripped from the headlines of my real life. He does such a wonderful job of turning on a dime from being mild-mannered and professional, talking to Max about his accounts, to completely losing it and melting down when he gets overwhelmed and... it's a joke, I know it's a joke, but it's just something that I'd never seen before, and rarely have since, which felt so much like my experience of the world and even though it was supposed to be a joke, and not a flattering one, it has always felt deeply validating to me. Some of us are very good at playing the part of a polite, professional, normal person right up until we get too anxious or overstimulated and then absolutely all the wheels fall off the wagon and we can't do it anymore and it becomes obvious how strange and not the persona we adopt to cope in the world we are, and honestly it means a lot to see that, even in a comedic context, when the character is not just a joke.

And, in this movie, Leo's arc is about letting go of his inhibitions and experiencing joy for what may be the first time in his life.

Bialystock: Having a good time?
Bloom: I don't know. I feel so strange.
Bialystock: Maybe you're happy.
Bloom: That's it, I'm happy. *starts to laugh* Well what do you know about that? I'm happy!

The dream! Is he being manipulated into white collar crime by a scoundrel who, at first, only saw him as a means to make a fortune and exploited his loneliness and the ways he's been alienated by his oddness to do so, by being, perhaps, the first person who's ever been nice to him?

Bialystock, walking through the park arm-in-arm with Bloom: Call me Max. You know I don't let everyone call me Max. Just those people I like.
Bloom: And you can call me Leo.
Bialystock: I already did!
Bloom: Oh! *lifts his hand to touch his forehead in embarrassed delight*
Bialystock: Where would you like to eat?
Bloom: Well, Max. I don’t know, Max. What do you think, Max?

I mean, yeah, sure, but that doesn't mean it's not vicariously liberating to watch him stand on a fountain and shout, "I want everything I've ever seen in the movies! I'm Leo Bloom. I'm me! I can do whatever I want! I'm Leo Bloom!"

And it also doesn't mean that Bialy's fondness for him remains a lie, because very swiftly they are both incredibly fond of each other and not shy about being demonstrative about it.

ID: two screencaps where Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom embrace, posted to Tumblr by [tumblr.com profile] cherry-flavored-sigh on February 15, 2015.

There is a scene at the end of the movie where they get caught for embezzling and Leo speaks on Bialy's behalf, which goes like this:

I would like to say something your honor, not on my behalf, but in reference to my partner, Mr. Bialystock. Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Max Bialystock is the most selfish man I ever met in my life. Not only is he liar, and a cheat and a scoundrel, and a crook, who has taken money from little old ladies, he has also talked people into doing things, especially me, that they would never in a thousand years had dreamed of doing.

But, your honor, as I understand it the law was created to protect people from being wronged. Your honor, whom has Max Bialystock wronged? I mean, whom has he really hurt? Not me. Not me.

I was... this man... No one ever called me 'Leo' before! I mean, I know it's not a big legal point, but even in kindergarten they used to call me 'Bloom!' I never sang a song before! I mean with someone else, I never sang a song with someone else before. This man, this man, this is a wonderful man. He made me what I am today... he did.

And what of the dear ladies? What would their lives have been without Max Bialystock? Max Bialystock, who made them feel young, and attractive, and wanted again. That's all I have to say.

I cry on at least a monthly basis when the words "I never sang a song before! I mean with someone else, I never sang a song with someone else before" and, again, maybe it's a joke but "Nobody ever called me 'Leo' before (...) even in kindgarten they used to call me 'Bloom!'" will never fail to produce at least a little mistiness, including now as I write this. It is also kind of the basis for my trans headcanon of Leo Bloom, but that is besides the point. Anyway...

Zero Mostel as Max Bialystock

You know who I used to be? Max Bialystock! King of Broadway! Six shows running at once! Lunch at Delmonico's. $200 suits. You see this? This once held a pearl as big as your eye! Look at me now. LOOK AT ME NOW! I'm wearing a cardboard belt!

So, having spoken at great length about Leo Bloom, you might get the impression that I'm not that pushed about Max Bialystock. And, oh, how wrong you would be.

I have, for years, made jokes on Tumblr about The Type, alluding to my penchant for sleazy, dapper (but often slovenly and/or shabby) crooks with poorly concealed hearts of gold and soft spots for certain people. Your Bernard Blacks, your Grunkle Stans, your Quarks, your Norman Stanley Fletchers, and, very, very much in keeping with that, your Max Bialystocks.

He just is... this man. This is a wonderful man.

Also, while a movie with Mr. "Don't touch my blue blanket!" in it was always going to have me identifying more with Leo Bloom, Bialy himself is not exactly... um, unrelatable. I mean:

Bloom, look at me. Look at me, Bloom. Bloom, I'm drowning. Other men sail through life. Bialystock has struck a reef. Bloom, I'm going under. I'm being sunk by a society that demands success when all I can offer is failure.

I just... when will a dishonest man come and manipulate me into commiting white collar crime for him? When will an earnest and profoundly weird little man come and change my life by merely posing a little accounting theory and falling in love with me?

Because, in a move that could not be more on-brand for me, I do very much ship this. How could you not, honestly?

The movie is also, when it's not being the beautiful love story of an unscrupulous down-on-his-luck producer and a lonely autistic accountant, an irreverant anti-fascist satire (i.e. a satire that is anti-fascist, not a satire of anti-fascism) that was highly controversial when it was released, and has been, to varying degrees, ever since.

Content warning: discussion of Nazis and fascism, and allusions to, although not detailed discussion or descriptions of, the Holocaust

I do certainly think that over the years there have been fictional depictions of Nazis as inept villains used for comedy that insensitively diminished the horror of what the Nazis did, but for my money, that's not what's happening with The Producers. And, frankly, if anyone gets to make this particular movie, it's a Jewish WWII veteran. I also think that there is a distinct line between diminishing the Holocaust through comedy and in deflating the glamour of fascism by exposing it as ridiculous through comedy, and I think the latter can be a very effective means of making fascists seem less admirable. Which, unfortunately seems to be a trap even people who would never consider Nazism to be something that should be emulated can fall into: this idea that the Nazis really were extraordinary ubermenschen who were dazzlingly competent and even stylish, in a way, in their pagentry and their self-invented mythos of themselves.

No. They were buffoons. They were evil genocidal murderers and, as the meme goes, you do not, under any circumstances, 'have to give it to them.'

This is not just an idealogical objection that it's in bad taste to do this either, although it certainly is in extremely poor taste at best, I also feel that it's factually wrong. Hitler, and other people in leadership positions in Nazi Germany, made stupid strategic decisions all the time, and things like the idea that they made the public infrastructure much better are largely myths from what I understand,* because for some reason there is this desire among some on the left to see fascist governments as more effective. They're not. They were buffoons and they were evil genocidal murderers. You don't have to be a genius tactitian to be evil.

Lindsay Ellis made a video essay about the use of satire in The Producers a few years ago, which I think is very good and certainly a lot better expressed and researched and more convincing than anything I just shot off the hip.

Mel Brooks, The Producers and the Ethics of Satire about N@zis

*This impression is based on what I remember having read elsewhere from sources I believed to be trustworthy at the time, but I can't quite remember where and I am not a WWII expert or an academic, and I didn't rigorously fact-check myself on this when I was writing this post, or find sources to include that support my claim here, so, TL;DR citation needed (and if anyone does have a good source debunking this oft-repeated trope, I would greatly appreciate it). Just a quick note here though: I'm not interested in debating whether or not the Nazis were in any way admirable. I think I've made where I stand clear and I will be screening comments to avoid giving a platform to that sentiment, so I wouldn't bother if I were you.

Search in your current space, whether brick-and-mortar or digital. Post a picture (a link to a picture will be fine!) or description of something that is or represents:

1. Something your favorite character would like
2. Something that makes you laugh
3. A fandom place you would like to visit
4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet
5. Something you find comforting
6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood
7. A piece of clothing you love
8. A book or song with a color in the title
9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand

  1. Something your favorite character would like
This one was tricky! For one, I have so many characters who I love it would be hard to single out out as my absolute number one favourite, and for another I am quite different from a lot of my favourite characters in the things I like, or at least am a bit short on stuff they'd like at the moment. So, in the spirit of a well-intentioned relative doing their very best:
It's the thought that counts, Blorbo...

A brown sock next to another partially knitted brown sock

Who doesn't love nice, warm hand knitted socks? They're made from 100% alpaca fibre yarn! Well, almost 100%, there's a bit of polyamide in there to make them more hardwearing. But all the better, really, less darning! Really, Blorbo, you could be a little grateful.

  2. Something that makes you laugh
This one was a lot easier, because I was in the middle of laughing at it when I first read today's challenge on the [community profile] snowflake_challenge community.
You gotta make your own fun sometimes...

Cover art for a podcast titled 'An Oral History of Trek Rarepair Swap with cosmic_llin and SweetPollyOliver, ft. misc. squeeing about the ships that started it all.' On the cover is an image of Worf and Data in front of a heart as well as one of Seven of Nine and Sarina Douglas.

This is a once-off single episode podcast I recorded with my fellow [tumblr.com profile] trek-rarepair-swap co-mod [personal profile] cosmic_llin recently for [community profile] voiceteam's Mystery Box 2023 event. The challege was Temptation and [archiveofourown.org profile] bluedreaming tempted people to record a mini-podcast or oral not!fic about their favourite overlooked fandom/rare ship/etc., which I all but jumped at and immediately asked the mods if it would be okay to record something with a non-Mystery Box participant if I did the rest of the work of creating the audio work, i.e. organising, editing and cover art, etc., and fortunately they gave me the all clear.

It was really lovely to record this with Llin and reminisce on the magical four years we spent modding [tumblr.com profile] trek-rarepair-swap together, the amazing community that built around it, the many wonderful fanworks that were created for it, and the Star Trek rarepairs of our own that inspired the creation of the swap.

If you're interested, you can listen to the pod on AO3 via an embedded stream, or you can use the download link on the work to get a copy of the MP3. Or not, this is not intended as a hard sell, haha. But in my subjective opinion it is a pleasant 51 minutes of listening to two Star Trek nerds being silly.

  3. A fandom place you would like to visit
Now, to be clear, I am not saying that this would be a good idea, but:
    All roads lead to...

A photograph of a copy of the Discworld novel The Truth

or rather away from, the Big Wahoonie itself: Ankh-Morpork! More specifically, the offices of The Ankh-Morpork Times to visit William de Worde, who in many ways is The pedantic, morally scrupulous, yet often a bit of a dick, OCD/autistic character of all time. Also, going to visit a newspaper office at a place that's vaguely analogous to a Gutenberg-era print shop is too good a chance to pass up.

  4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet
I am going to cheat here and pick two...

A photograph of two books: Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik and Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis

I went to World Con 2019 in no small part to see both of these creators. Sadly, Lindsay Ellis overslept, I think due to jet-lag, and missed the panel she was supposed to do on the day I had a ticket for, but I did get to go to two things where Naomi Novik spoke, which were both fabulous. In one, she read the first chapter of the then-upcoming A Deadly Education. She was a very engaging and funny speaker and had both sets of crowds in the palm of her hand.

I've loved Novik's Temereaire series for years, and reading Spinning Silver was what finally got me to get my drop spindle out again after having it for a full year before then but not being able to figure out how to use it from videos, and I at long last managed to crack how to get the first bit of fluff to catch onto my leader thread, which has brought a great deal of fun and quality of life to me in the years since. From reading Novik's work, I really like her sense of humour and her ideas, and I think she'd be fun to chat to in a low stakes sort of setting.

And, regarding my cheat-y second pick, it would be nice to see Lindsay Ellis speak in person at some point, even if I didn't get to "meet" her, since I didn't get the chance to see her panel in 2019.

  5. Something you find comforting
    This one was a doozy...

A photograph of a Hobonichi 5-year-journal, with the top lefthand box for Jan 1 2024 written in. On the page opposite, a small photograph has been printed out and stuck down of a laptop playing an episode of Porridge on set up on a tray, which also has an in-progress brown sock on four double-pointed knitting needles sitting in front of it.

I've blurred most of the handwriting here to protect the innocent, or myself at any rate, but this is a kind of three, or perhaps even four-for-one thing that I find comforting. Firstly, I find planners and journals very helpful in terms of using pen and paper as a better memory than my fallible meaty brain and in helping me unplug a bit and do something tactile to stop my eyes from getting too square from looking at a screen. Secondly, I also like printing out digital photos on either of my two Polaroid printers, because I so often lose my photographs when I change phones, or I never back them up, and it's nice to just have them somewhere printed out and maybe stuck down. Even, and maybe especially, silly fandom-y ones. Thirdly and fourthly, in the photo-in-the-photo here, you can see my current knitting project, which is another non-digital hobby I am trying to give more time to, and the show that's paused on my laptop in the photo is Porridge, which I've been finding to be very comforting to revisit recently.

More specifically about journaling though, I have found that with my five-year Hobonichi journal, I've been trying to talk about the things, which so far this year have mostly been silly little fandom things, I'm doing that I want to remember five years from now, and that I want to remember how I felt about them at the time.

It has been kind of interesting having a five-year journal for the first time, because I've been finding myself very hestitant to be too optimistic about looking ahead, knowing that I will be looking back on what I'm writing, because historically with journaling it has been a bit dispiriting reading about things I wanted/intended/thought I would do that never happened or didn't work out.

But I suppose that's all part of life, really, and I do want to be able to capture how I really feel in part because I know it will change and I don't want to fall prey to thinking that I don't change my mind and that I've always thought X, Y or Z. The only constant is change, but I like to keep in touch with my past self and write my future self letters about how I'm getting on, you know? So I have, at the very least, been writing down that I'm worried about being optimistic and that it feels foolish, because I don't want to forget that's how I felt. I don't want to put on a brave face to my future self and hope the shame of having over-promised how well I'd do will keep me on the straight and narrow, but I also don't want to self-censor out of some kind of misguided PR-motivated impulse to not look foolish to myself.

  6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood
I actually had another plan for this one, until I saw this during the IRL portion of my scavenger hunt...

A photograph of Vol 2 of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers trade paperback published by Boom! Comics.

It wasn't actually the Boom! comics that got me into my brief, but intense, summer of writing Bulk/Skull fic and talking about Power Rangers on Tumblr in 2016, but it was this intense revisitation of my childhood favourite that led me to read the first few volumes of the MMPR and Go Go Power Rangers comics. I sort of fell off around Shattered Grid, and did intend on catching up again at one point, but there has been a lot of lamentation and rending of garments about writing choices that the comics have made from the people I follow on Tumblr who have kept up, so I may or may not at this point.

Regardless though, it's nice to be reminded of my summer of Power Rangers, because that felt like a very pure and unabashed expression of fannish joy and I want to do that more often for whatever niche corners of fandom I find myself in. It was also around that time that I was revisiting a lot of stuff from my childhood again and allowing myself to just be self-indulgent and juvenile about liking what I liked, up to and including campy '90s shows with questionable monster costumes, which is another thing I want to remember to do more often.

  7. A piece of clothing you love
In the context of #3, this one is kind of funny...

A photograph of a blue Ray Spooner Aloha shirt with a repeating pattern of simplified illustrations based on the cover art of albums by The Beach Boys

I coveted this Beach Boys-print Aloha shirt a lot before I bought it, because I was, at the time, trying very hard to be better about not buying things on the other side of the world impulsively and wanted to a) buy less new clothes in general and b) buy fewer clothes that weren't 100% natural fibres (this is 50/50 cotton and polyester IIRC). However, after about 5 weeks of sitting on my hands and Thinking Seriously about if I Really Needed it, I bought it. Just in time, really, because my size was very nearly sold out and it's a limited edition print that wasn't going to be brought back in stock. But I absolutely love it and I feel that it is very representative of me as a person, so I think that counts as mindful consumption, haha.

I have been trying to be more comfortable with the fact that I am not ever going to be able to pull off the willowy androgyne, or tall lumberjack, take on masculinity just because of my basic body type, which even with HRT can only change so much. I will always be short and round with small hands and feet, but that's okay because there are lots of short, round-faced men (and otherwise masculine-of-centre people) and they are great, so if I'm more of the Justin McElroy school of masculine gender presentation then I want to do that very hard and on purpose instead of living in bland unisex clothes that I try to hide in. I've fallen off a bit on this fashion-effort lately, so this is a good reminder to keep persisting in trying to get better at this.

And, regarding what I said about the relationship to #3, I wore this shirt when I was going to visit some friends in North Wales, one of whom happened to be wearing a Rincewind shirt when I got off the train. The friend wearing the Rincewind shirt took my luggage for me and my other friend remarked, shortly after I got done taking a photograph of the sign for Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch,* "Um, so I've noticed something here..." and we all had a good laugh about me doing touristy things while I was doing an unintentional closet cosplay of Twoflower and my friend was channeling Rincewind at the same time. I, fortunately, did not leave my luggage in Wales, however.

*Which, incidentally, is a request only stop, so I had to tell the conductor that it was where I was disembarking ahead of time, a task for which I prepared by relentlessly drilling myself with Welsh language tutorials on YouTube and getting Welsh friends at [community profile] vidukon_cardiff, where I was travelling from, to tutor me on the pronunciation before I left the hotel. All told, I spent almost a full day on this preparation (remember what I said about finding William de Worde relatable?), only, after all that, for the conductor to tell me he was getting off at Chester and I would have to tell the next fella.

Should you ever be in this situation though, I have been reliably informed that you don't have to say the whole name, and would seem like a bit of a try-hard if you attempted to, and all that you need to do is say "Llanfair-PG" or, if you really want to seem like you're in the know, "Llanfairpwllgwyngyll." I tried the latter the first time pretty successfully with conductor #1, but stumbled at the fence by not taking a long enough run up to it with conductor #2, and had to resort to shamefacedly saying that I'd meant Llanfair-PG.

The rather unfortuante thing is that even with an abbreviated version of the name in question, I'm really bad at the ll sound in Welsh (to say nothing of other sounds in Welsh that weren't there to trip me up on this occasion, like the trilled r), so I run into issues straight away. But, as an Irish person who gets very irate about tourists on the train who do not even attempt to learn how to say Irish language place-names and just blithely and confidently mangle them by assuming they should be pronounced like English, I wanted to do my best and make a genuine attempt. Which, unfortunately, was not amazing. Better luck next time, I guess, lol. At least I knew that written Welsh has it's own phonetic conventions that are not identical to written English, I suppose?
[return to where you left off.]

  8. A book or song with a color in the title
    This is very cheeky, but...

Cover art for a filk titled 'Under a Blanket of Green' and subtitled 'an ode to blanket permission'

I also recorded this filk for [community profile] voiceteam's Mystery Box event. It's based on Under a Blanket of Blue, as performed by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. I was taking part in a Filk Broken Telephone and the work before mine was 'Meet me in the blanket fort' (based on Meet Me in the Battlefield) by [archiveofourown.org profile] irrationalpie, so this seemed like a good lead on from that and I liked the opportunity for green as a reference to [archiveofourown.org profile] BrickGrass's browser extension that highlights the usernames of users on [archiveofourown.org profile] Rindle's directory of creators with blanket permission statements for transformative works of their fanworks in green, because an audio fanwork event seemed like the right venue for a work about blanket permission statements.

I do a fair bit of amateur singing and other kinds of music in a non-fannish context, but this is the first time I've made an attempt at a musical fanwork, so I hope it turned out okay. If I was doing it again I'd use my other mic, because this sounded a bit tinny, but I think it's listenable.

If you're curious, you can click on the image itself to follow the link to the AO3 work, or for convenience, here's another link here. But absolutely no pressure, and I am linking purely in case people wanted to hear it to save them from hunting it down or asking for a link. My 2024 fandom mission statement is doing whatever I want whether people are interested or not, so if you're not interested then that's genuinely fine.

  9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand
    Some more cheekiness...

A screenshot of a Porridge fic by SweetPollyOliver titled Cockatoo in Malibu

Once again, the image is a link and here is another one, haha. But also, once again, I genuinely do not expect anyone to make use of either of these links and am just putting them there on the off-chance someone does want a link and, honestly, to scratch the itch caused by the HTML-fuelled goblin that lives in my brain.

I'm mostly including this at all to show that I am walking the walk re: doing whatever niche bullshit I want as I resolved to as part of my day #2 resolutions, because I've already written another fic for one of the micro fandoms I nominated, requested, and offered for Yuletide,* in addition to the one I wrote for my assignment.

I am 10,000% delighted with how well I did out of Yuletide this year—so much in fact that I still wanted to write more because I was all fired up. So I did. Even though it will be completely impenetratible to, I'm gonna say, 100% of the people who are subscribed to my AO3 profile. And I may still write more! I have an idea for a vid too.

*And, happily, which I was gifted two wonderful fics for as well, Long Drawn Sunday Night by [personal profile] twoam and A Bit of Bottle by [personal profile] nomadicwriter, as having the opportunity to write one of my own, What Good Are Cupid's Arrows to a Fletcher Without a Beau?, for my recip [archiveofourown.org profile] Emma_Oz.

Challenge #4

IceBreaker Challenge! Tell us about yourself. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh, hmm, let me think about how to go about this in a way that's not just very fandom specific.

Here goes!

  • I love words and wordplay and writing sentence-level prose that I find sonically, or otherwise, satisfying (which I fixate on often at the expense of doing a better job with larger structural stuff, or in deprioritising writing things that sound plausible instead of that just make my brain fizz).
  • Another of my writing foibles is that I can't bear to write sad things that aren't in any way funny, or funny things that aren't a bit sad.
  • I am very over-confident and self-satisfied while also being profoundly insecure and embarrassed by every minute aspect of my person.
  • I often try to be a dilettante and an expert, with varying degrees of success.
  • I am instinctively very good at understanding cat body language, but had to learn human social skills from my culture of origin very deliberately and by rote and only really got the hang of them in my mid-twenties.
  • I'm really going to try to have one that is unambiguously positive now: I am well loved by many wonderful friends who I met through fandom.

Challenge #3

Create a wish list of fandom things (podfic, graphics, playlists, canon recs translations, research help, vids, sky's the limit!) that you'd like to receive. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh gosh! I obviously do not feel entitled to expect any of these wishes to coming true, but in the spirit of blue-sky thinking, here's some things that would make my entire year:

  • A shippy Fletch/Godber Porridge fanwork of any variety.
  • A synopsis of, or fanwork about, a hypothetical episode of The Muppet Show (1976-1981) where the very special guest is a contemporary 2020s celebrity. Time travel optional, and feel free to use any medium (text, audio, audiovisual, visual, etc.) or format, e.g. meta, notfic, oral notfic, fanart, etc.
  • An unconventional soulmate AU, or a fake dating fanwork, about Roman Roy/Gerri Kellman.
  • A recommendation of a new-to-me fandom with a canon younger man/older woman ship.
  • A Survivor (as in the reality TV show) AU for any of my fandoms (anything I have a fandom tag on Dreamwidth for and anything I've created a fanwork for on AO3, besides Teen Wolf which I'm not really into anymore, is fair game).

Challenge #2

In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've just reviewed the fandom goals that I posted for 2023 for day 12 of last week's Snowflake Challenge, and I did better on them than I expected to! I had a full success with 5/11, a qualified success with 8/11 (I gave myself a few cheats on three of them to make up lost ground), and made some progress on all of my goals, even the ones I consider failures overall.

Looking at what was easy, what I was just about able to pull out of the bag, and what I thought was going to be easy but then didn't manage, I'm going to make the following adjustments for my goals this year:

  • Participate in three fandom exchanges.
  • Create one treat for an exchange.
  • Create three pinch hits.
  • Beta read three fics.
  • Bind three books (none of which have to be a new typeset, or my own typeset).
  • Typeset three fics (they do not have to be the same ones I bind).
  • Record, edit, and post at least one podfic a month (one Mulligan is allowed if I miss a month and then make it up by posting two in another month).
  • Finish my podfic of Wedding is Destiny; and Hanging Likewise by [archiveofourown.org profile] sqbr.
  • Complete and post two fanvids.
  • Health and other circumstances permitting, attend two in-person conventions.
  • Comment on at least one fanwork a week.
  • Update Dreamwidth at least once a month.
  • Write whatever self indulgent niche fic I want to without worrying about whether anyone else will care about it.

The last one is more qualitative, because I don't want to set a hard target of "Write one fic no one cares about a month" or something, but I do want to get more comfortable with just pursuing ideas that I am interested by and want to write without being worried about Alienating People Who Subscribed To My AO3 Profile For [X Fandom] or that no one will read it, or whatever.

In general, I've tried to (slightly) scale up the goals that I succeeded on last year, and scale down the ones that I didn't, or make them less specific so there's a wider scope for success. Most of my goals are less specific than they were last year, actually, but I think that this is good because it means I might try more things. I've also dropped a couple of goals that I think are sort of done, or that I'm doing okay on without tracking them/setting a goal for them.

I've recently finished watching the CBS adaptation of Ghosts recently and I am now, to put it mildly, completely consumed with it, and with a particular ship in it (featuring the ghost of a standoffish and repressed aristocratic Gilded Age woman in her early fifties and the ghost of a douchey fratboy Y2K finance bro in with a heart of gold in his early thirties), and I want to do little more than make fanworks for it.

Over the past three(?) days I've written a fic and made a playlist and wrote commentary about it and uploaded both.

Details and links below, for those curious! (mildly nsfw and there are spoilers for season two of CBS Ghosts)

A screencap of Hetty gripping Trevor by the chin while they both sit on a bed which has been edited to resemble a damaged old photograph and captioned 'H-Money Can't Buy Me Love'

Fandom: Ghosts (2021)
Title: [playlist and commentary] H-Money Can't Buy Me Love
Relationship/characters: Trevor Lefkowitz/Hetty Woodstone
Time: 01:07:00
Word count: 3284
Rating: Teen and up (for language and non-graphic sexual refrences).
Warning(s): N/A, I think? I'm a bit jokingly mean about Hetty's emotional repression, if that's something you might be sensitive to, but it is not meant with sincere malice.
Summary: This follows closely along with how the characters got together in canon, with them initially hooking up to help each other out when they were both very sexually frustrated, which transitioned into a secret affair that Trevor was under the impression Hetty only wanted to be secret to make it more thrilling, but was devastated when he realised that she would really be embarrassed by people finding out when someone does find out and tries to blackmail them. They break it off, briefly, and then get back together when Hetty realises that she let go of a good thing and they tell everyone that they are together. They do also, subsequently, pretend to break up in a later episode and go back to being together secretly, but I think that's mostly so they don't have to go on double dates they find boring rather than out of a reluctance to have an emotionally committed relationship instead of a spicy affair.

Fandom: Ghosts (2021)
Title: La Petite Naissance
Relationship/characters: Trevor Lefkowitz/Hetty Woodstone
Word count: 3058
Rating: Explicit
Warning(s): (mild) unnegotiated kink, insecurity and anxiety about (consensual) sex due to sexual inexperience
Summary: In canon Hetty originally thinks that it is not possible for people of her anatomy to orgasm (or, seemingly, feel sexual arousal at all) until another ghost suggests she sit on an old, clattery washing mashine and she finds it somewhat revelatory. The inspiration for this fic came from an idea I had during a conversation with another author in the fandom, wytchwoods, in the comments of their excellent fic Human Contact where Hetty has her first orgasm with Trevor. They mentioned being disappointed that canon had later contradicted that, because Flower said that Hetty's first orgasm was on the washing machine, but I thought that didn't really count as being categorically jossed, because maybe Hetty had mistakenly thought she'd had an orgasm on the washing machine, but had just been very turned on and didn't know how to tell the difference, because it had never happened before. And once she did know better, that she just allowed Flower to spread that particular piece of misinformation without correcting it, so she didn't have to deal with the fact that it had been Trevor who'd got her there the first time and that, maybe, she wasn't entirely unmoved by his role in that. Or, indeed, think about the fact that he might mean more to her than being a convenient means of getting off. And then I immediately wrote a fic about that, lol.

Dear Festividder,

Hi! I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] SweetPollyOliver on AO3. Thank you so much for offering one of the fandoms I've requested! I can't wait to see what you make :D

General vid and music related likes
  • Humourous lyrics or ironic pairings of clips with lyrics for a humorous effect
  • Character study vids
  • Ensemble vids
  • Uptempo vids with lots of quick cuts on the beat and a sense of movement
  • But also: slower, contemplative vids with long clips
  • Vids with a strong narrative/emotional arc
  • Music specific likes:
    • Vocal jazz, especially Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Chet Baker (my token white man in this category, lol). I mostly listen to stuff from the 1930s-1960s, but I'd be thrilled to get something set to more contemporary jazz too
    • Great American Songbook singers, i.e. anyone known for singing things composed by Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, Rodgers & Hammerstein, etc. but especially Judy Garland
    • Motown, e.g. Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and Smokey Robinson
    • Disco, e.g. The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Boney M., Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan and the Village People
    • Rock and pop from the 1960s-1980s, e.g. The Mamas & the Papas, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Cher, The Turtles, The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, ABBA and Queen

    • Musical theatre e.g. Patti Lupone, Audra McDonald, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel
    • Country, e.g. Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Trixie Mattel, Skeeter Davis, Loretta Lyn, Woody Guthrie, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Norah Jones, Lil Nas X, Sheryl Crow and Miley Cyrus
Other notes regarding vid preferencesThere aren't any genres of music that I actively dislike and if you get the vibe that I would like something based on the things I have listed above, and it's not a DNW, then you're probably right. I don't listen to a huge amount of instrumental music, but I do enjoy it! Also feel free to vid something to a non-music audio source, such as poetry. I don't have strong opinions about talky face, so unless it's something you personally prefer to avoid then don't worry about it on my account.

  • On-screen suicide
  • Footage of rats
  • Strobing or sudden bright lights

Requested fandoms
Porridge (TV 1974)I rewatched Porridge a little while ago for the first time in years and was suddenly and violently reminded of how much I shipped Fletch and Godber when I saw the show as a teenager, a thing which a dear friend, who shall remain nameless, said that it made "total sense" as a ship for me, presumably given my long documented weakness for pudgy middle aged con-men, and for pairing them with wide eyed younger and more innocent sidekicks who adore them. You do not have to come with me on the magical journey of shipping Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale if that's not something that makes sense for you though, and I would be more than delighted with a gen vid.
Some specific ideas if that would be helpfulI think that the obvious route to go is to do something funny, possibly related to Fletch's many schemes, or his antagonistic relationship with Mr MacKay, or something about his relationship with Godber through either a canon-aligned gen lens or a shippy lens, or maybe a bigger ensemble vid about the inmates in Slade Prison managing to not let the bastards grind them down through various means. If you wanted to do something less lighthearted than the show itself usually was about incarceration that would also be cool to see.

When Harry Met Sally (1989) [SAFETY]I have been completely obsessed with this movie since I was about twelve. I do not in any way co-sign the semi-implicit theme that men and women can never be friends, because the sex always gets in the way, but that's never spoiled the movie for me. I can totally buy that this man and woman can't just be friends. I just love Sally's fussy perfectionism and optimism and Harry's nihilistic cynicism and I don't see them as "you know what women/men are like!" archetypes at all, because they feel so much like real and individual people to me.
That said! (specific ideas and prompts)You do not have to feature the romance centrally, or at all, if you'd prefer to focus on other elements of the movie, like a character study of one of them, or something about Sally's relationship with her friend Marie (played by the late great Carrie Fisher and who is amazing in this movie), possibly combining it with Harry's friendship with Jess, or Marie and Jess's romantic relationship, or Harry and Sally's friendship, or all of the above in a kind of metacommentary on the film's thesis that romantic and/or sexual attraction surpasses platonic love. I think that there are also so many beautiful visuals of New York in the movie that you could make use of if you wanted to do something about the city as a character in the movie.

Gattaca (1997) [SAFETY]I'm always kind of surprised when people say that Gattaca has aged poorly in its takes about disability, because I kind of think it's spot on? It's a very powerful commentary on eugenics and ableism in my opinion, and things like Jerome/Eugene's internalised ableism regarding his paralysis and his anger with himself for not living up the expected potential of his genome is not co-signed by the movie itself as far as I can tell.
At any rate (ideas and prompts)I think that you could pull on some interesting threads about ableism and meritocracy if you vidded this. I think it would probably be a more serious and somber vid, because while I do like humour the only way I could really see a way of incorporating it here if I were to do something myself is by picking something with bitterly ironic lyrics about not being good enough? I do also ship the hell out of Vincent/Jerome and Jerome/Eugene, so you're more than welcome to play with that dynamic if it interests you. I think that there's some fun identity fuckery things to tease out there and it would be very interesting to see that in a vid as opposed to a fic. I don't not ship the canon f/m ship though, so please don't feel like Irene is not welcome in the vid! Again, I think that while obviously the movie is about specific indivuals and how the eugenicist society they live in has affected them, it does also affect the whole of society, so an ensemble vid with multiple characters (possibly including the guy at the end who didn't blow Vincent/Jerome's cover because his own child would probably face workplace descrimination based on their genetics as he wasn't "all that they promised, but then who knows what he could do?")—maybe something that featured lines of dialogue from the movie? Although I think with the right song choice there are certainly the visuals to convey that kind of message. Something about Vincent's relationship with his brother, and family, would also be interesting, possibly as part of a character study. Just a note: please do not feature footage of the canonical suicide scene.

Willow (TV 2022)The Willow movie from the 1980s is incredibly dear to me and I was really looking forward to this show for a long time (it kept getting pushed back, which made waiting feel agonizing and now... well. Anyway.) but it turned out to be everything I could ever have wanted from a sequel/reboot. Visually, it's so in keeping with the aesthetic of the movie, with the higher production values not implying a disrespect or reinvention of what came before. Also! The new characters are so, so amazing! The returning characters are also amazing and there isn't this kid-gloves treatment where they're afraid to present beloved characters as complex and flawed.
Prompts/ideasI think that you could span the whole spectrum from a very straight epic fantasy vibe to something more irreverant and silly. The show handles both tones very well and either (or a combination of both) would be very in keeping with that. I think a contemporary choice of music would work well—maybe a cover of something from the 80s if you wanted to get meta with it? I love all the characters and an ensemble vid, or a character study of any of them, or a shippy vid with any of the canon relationships, or perhaps something about Elora and Kit's contentious relationship, which I am basically sitting there chewing through a chair leg about every time I see them on screen together. Some character specific angles I can think of is maybe a Kit vid about her relationship to her family and to the privileges and responsibilities of nobility, something about Jade's relationship to Galladorn, both before and after [SPOILERS REDACTED], a vid about Boorman being annoyed by the younger cast/Kit in particular and trying not to let on that he's warming up on them, something about Willow's arc from the movie to the show and the tragedy he's lived through and the weight of responsibility on him, or something about Graydon's relationship to magic and the guilt he lives with. There is a lot of scope in this fandom and I really don't thinkt here's a wrong move here, so if you have a different idea then by all means go for it!

Cagney & Lacey (TV 1981)Full disclosure: I started watching this show primarily, some might say exclusively, for reasons of being thirsty for Martin Kove (and then very rapidly started being thirsty for Tyne Daly). However! It's so much more than that. It is, of course, a cop show, with all that that entails, but I think that, in many ways, it does a better job of portraying nuance and honesty about the failings of the police than a lot of more contemporary police procedurals? Your mileage may vary, of course. I certainly think that it holds up very well compared to its contemporaries in the genres at any rate though.
Prompts/ideasI think that there's a lot of ways you could go on this! You could do something about gendered expectations of the 1980s (in the police force and more generally), you could do something about friendship, you could do something that was explicitly critical of the show's more overtly copaganda moments. Music-wise, I think something from the time period would work well, but that's not to say that something more modern, or something from an earlier time period, like something deeply sexist that came out when that sentiment was less controversial in the mainstream, along the lines of Wives and Lovers. In terms of the titular character themselves, I am deeply compelled by the contradictions and self interest of Cagney's politics, where sexism (against her) is very bad, but she's otherwise markedly conservative and status quo (and I think Republican? Oof, Christine...). I personally read her as I see her as a closeted (even to herself) lesbian and/or aromantic who has been very messed up by being raised by her socially conservative father. Something about her struggles with alcoholism would be very interesting, as would something about her stated feminism juxtaposed with her willingness to pull the ladder up behind herself and judge women who make choices she disapproves of, or come from backgrounds she is prejudiced against, or her partnership with Lacey, or her issues with maintaining romantic relationships, etc. For Lacey, I love her relationship with her husband and how unconventional it is for TV marriages of the time period, where he stayed at home with the boys for the first few seasons and does most of the cooking, etc. I also love how they are both such raging pinkos, because I think it would have been very easy for the show to be like "She is the married one who has kids, so therefore the conservative, as opposed to the sexually liberated single one with no dependents." Something about how she's in the era of "you can have it all!" and how demanding it actually is to try to have it all would be really great, as would something about her partnership with Cagney, or something about her politics (either juxtaposed against the background sexism of her workplace, against Cagney's politics, or against her own choice to join the police force). I am also, and I say this merely as a passaway thought that you do not have to pay much mind to, not at all opposed to shirtless footage of Martin Kove in the mix somewhere...

Steele Justice (1987) [SAFETY]So uh... yeah. About how I'm violently in lust with Martin Kove? That was the one and only reason I watched this movie the first time and I wasn't expecting it to have any appeal other than beefcake, but... oh my god. I could not have been more wrong. This is an extremely bizarre, but amazing, action movie where Kove plays an ex-cop and Vietnam verteran John Steele whose former partner gets killed by an organised criminal gang (full disclosure: the former partner and the criminal organisation are both Vietnamese) and who he... okay, so the plot is kind of so hard to follow that I experience it every time as if for the first in some ways, but basically he gets frustrated with the bureaucracy and ineptitute of The Proper Authorities and wages a one-man vigilante war against the gang. Which... he seems to face absolutely no consequences for at the end of the movie, where he also steals a police car and drives off from his ex-boss who is trying to beg him to come back to the police force. It is The movie of all time and not just because Martin Kove is at his most beautiful and objectifiable. With some caveats*, I highly recommend that you watch it and experience it in all it's baffling majesty!
Prompts/ideasSo, look, I would admire you a lot if you managed to full of a serious vid for this movie, but I think that going broad and silly is a very viable option that would be much easier. You can also go ham on the beefcake, because I'm absolutely here for it. Steele also has this incredibly homoerotic vibe with his ex-partner (who is essentially his fridged wife?) whose wive seemed absolutely fine with it and whose daughter he is implied to adopt, so if you could get enough footage for something that frames that relationship as explicitly romantic and you wanted to go for that, please feel more than welcome to!
*the way it tries to have it both ways on how it treats Vietanese people, the authoritarian/vengence-as-justice/not technically copaganda but only because the movie things they need to be WORSE, the seemingly adult woman playing a teenager/ten year old from the childish voice and mannerisms the actor uses, the giant honking confederate flag in a bar at the beginning of the movie, etc., etc.

The Tick (TV 2017)I am madly in love with this show. It is so silly and while it is occasionally winking at the camera, it is deeply and earnestly sincere and is never embarrassed about being a superhero show in the way a lot of modern superhero comic adaptations seem to be.
Prompts and ideasI like all of the characters and something about any of them and any of their relationships would be welcome (with the exception of Arthur/Danger Boat where Arthur reciprocates DB's feelings, because I am not always super comfortable with the way DB harasses Arthur being played for laughs, even if he is a boat with a sentient AI). I really love Arthur and Dot's sibling relationship where they sometimes almost resent each other and can try to restrict each other's agency in the name of protecting them, but they love each other so deeply. I also am always here for Dot and Overkill's relationship, either played as romantic or platonic, and I love how Dot's arc from season one to two and the part that Overkill played in it. I also love, love, love The Tick and his big blue heart. Gotta love a superhero with amnesia who is not really torn up about it, because he's just happy to be here. I do ship him and Arthur, but as with all the shippy things I've mentioned in this letter, that's definitely an optional extra. In terms of tone, I think that it's one where you can have high highs and low lows and you can go silly or serious or anywhere in between (or both!).

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) [SAFETY]I said in my Yuletide letter that I could watch this movie every day for a month and not get sick of it and I knew that because I'd done it and... yeah. Still very much that.
Prompts/IdeasThis is another one where I think an ensemble vid would work great, but any indvidiual you wanted to zoom in on or a particular interpersonal relationship would also be amazing. My one caveat here is that I do not buy that Doric reciprocates Simon's feelings for her... or that him not being confident enough was the issue in the first place, if you catch my drift. My drift being that I think she's a lesbian and I have no idea why that wasn't explicitly canon. Honestly my one criticism of the movie was that it could have been gayer, given that D&D is the queer nerd game. If you wanted to do a vid along those lines then that would be amazing! I, along with half the internet and their dog, am also deeply compelled by Edgin/Xenk and their whole thing where Edgin finds him insufferable and Xenk seems to find it very funny how annoyed he can make Edgin by being polite, straightforward, morally upright and implying that Edgin is at heart and honourable and good person. Ugh, what a jerk, right? 🤣 Something about Edgin's family (him and Zia and/or Kira; him and Holga; him, Kira and Holga; him and the party; any combination of the above) would be very lovely as well and I think it's one you could play pretty straight if you weren't in the mood for jokey jokes, or one where you could have humour, sentimentality, and pathos alongside each other. I also am here for Simon's arc of getting better at magic through gaining self confidence (Tub Thumping anyone?), or something about Forge being a smarmy bastard (I love him). I am here for any kind of vid for this fandom, honestly, so feel very free to follow your muse.

Marilyn Monroe Movies [UMBRELLA]I once came out of HMV with about six Marilyn Monroe DVDs and put them in a bag from the bookshop where I'd bought a book about her and my sister said, "But you can kind of take or leave Marilyn, can't you?" because what are siblings for if not to make sport of you. I think Marilyn was such a subtle and talented actor and it's such a shame that even now she's primarily remembered as a sex symbol and almost... a part of American iconography, whose personal tragedies only make her more consumable, as opposed to a real person who was highly skilled at her craft and dedicated to it and who had a difficult life that was not a predestined tragedy or a cautionary tale. My favourite movies of hers are Some Like it Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, Niagra, and Don't Bother to Knock. She doesn't have a huge role in it, but I also quite like her in There's No Business Like Show Business. I haven't seen all of her films, but feel free to pull from any of her work. I don't have any specific ideas, but I think there's a lot that you could play around with intertexually.

Only Murders in the Building (TV)They called it the intergenerational friendship murder mystery show of dreams... and it was. It really was. Well, is, it's been renewed for season 4. But. Yeah.
Ideas/prompts I just love how to the forefront anxieties about ageing and failure to reach expected markers of acheivement (either professionally, romanticaly, familially, or otherwise) is in this, in many ways, very silly comedy show. The highs are so high, the lows are so low, the silliness is so silly. I think that you could go very comedic or very dramatic with this and mix the two as much or as little as you wanted. I am always here for stuff about the central trio's relationship with each other, but I also highkey ship Theo Dimas with Mabel and would not be at all averse to seeing something along those lines. I also think that the rest of the cast are very interesting: Bunny and Uma's friendship, Howard's arc from lonely shut in whose only friend is his cat to someone who plays an active role in the plot as a recurring character, Cinda Canning and her... spectacular terribleness. I do support women's wrongs and Cinda is amazing. I am open to something shippy about Charles and Oliver, but I say that just on the off-chance that you wanted to do something like that anyway and weren't sure if I'd like it, so no pressure.

If you are someone browsing letters to scout out potential treats: hello! Thank you for the kind thought and if you are inspired by anything in my letter I am definitely open to being treated and have gifts enabled on AO3.

I generally take a long time listening to podfics longer than 10–30 minutes, because I get antsy and lose focus unless I have something to do with my hands—I don’t want to discourage you from making something longer if you want to, but I thought I’d just let you know about this upfront, so that if you did make a longer podfic for me, you weren’t worried that I didn't like it if it took me a while to listen to it in full and give you feedback. Regarding other preferences:

TL;DR, except for DNWs, everything I’ve said in this letter is extremely optional and I’ve only included what I have to give people who like a jumping off point some guidance into things I enjoy. Feel free to ignore whatever you don’t vibe with and read as much or as little of this as you like.I am very easy to please, so try not to get stressed worrying about what I would like or dislike as much as you can avoid it. I would much rather that you worked on something you really liked and enjoyed creating than that you were anxious the whole time worrying about my preferences. If I really don’t want something, I will DNW it, and other than that you’re golden. I will give some guidelines in case that’s what you’d prefer to work with, but they are just that: guidelines. Beyond my DNWs, I’m very happy for you to follow your own muse wherever it leads you. Also, I’ve structured this letter the way that I have so that you can jump around it easily and only read the parts that are relevant to you, so do not feel obligated to read the whole thing. I have only included so much and gone into so many specifics because I want to give you a range of options to use for inspiration if you feel stuck, or you want to have some insight into what I like before you started. I definitely would not only be happy with gifts that include the things I’ve included in my letter, and I do not want you to feel limited to things I have thought to include. I will also not be at all disappointed if you make me something that includes elements I didn’t mention specifically here whether it includes anything in my letter or not. I’m very happy to be given a gift that introduces me to new things to add to my list of likes! Like, really, I can’t stress enough that I am very easily won over by sincere enthusiasm from a creator and I love surprises, so I actively prefer when people create something for me that they’re really excited about than that they try to include things I’ve mentioned that they themselves feel meh about.

Minor bit of business here before we get started: please click on the spoiler tags to uncollapse the DNWs before you start reading the Likes section. You don’t have to read the DNWs first—basically, what’s going on is that I have a couple of anchor links from some of the things listed in my Likes to relevant exceptions I’d like people to steer clear of in the DNWs and those links only works if the DNW section is not collapsed behind its spoiler tag. The joys of HTML!

SFW likes (mostly—anything with additional elements that are NSFW is behind a spoiler tag and clearly marked as NSFW)I went into a lot of detail for some of these, so I have added spoiler tags to cut for length where appropriate.
  • AUs that are a completely different setting to canon, especially fusions with other canons such as Pacific Rim AUs or The Last Unicorn AUs (see DNWs for exceptions).
  • Dramatic irony, especially when it’s comedic.
    • That said, I love sincerity that is entirely unembarrassed of itself and does not try to deflate itself with irony.
  • Quiet, domestic stories that have a sense of contentment about them.
  • Exciting, dynamic stories that have a sense of uncertainty about them. I particularly really love stuff where I don’t know what’s going on for 85% of the fic and then it all clicks into place in the last 15% as reveals that were set up earlier start to fall like dominoes.
  • Found family.
additional detailsCharacters can have any kind of relationship to their family of origin in these kinds of fics—I am equally happy with fic about or featuring found families where the characters haven’t spoken to their parents in years and never intend to again and fic where one of the characters called their mom to talk to her about sourdough starter yesterday. Mixing and matching between these two extremes can be fun too!
  • Queer platonic partnerships.
additional detailsThe character(s) can be aro and/or ace, and/or be sexually and/or romantically attracted to a different gender to their QPP, or they can just be queer platonic partners because that is the kind of relationship that suits them and not due to a mismatch/mutual incompatibility of sexual and/or romantic orientation.
  • References to queer culture and history. This can be in conjunction with one or more queer ships, but can also be in a gen fic featuring one or more queer characters.
  • Pining.
additional detailsI especially like this when the character in question’s feelings are actually requited and they’re just unaware (especially-especially if the reader is aware before the character is through clues given but not explicitly stated in the narration) but also when their feelings genuinely are one-sided.
  • Rarepairs.
additional detailsIn most of my fandoms, I usually end up getting more and more niche over time. I love when my first reaction to seeing a ship tag is, “Huh?” but then when I read the fic I’m completely sold by the execution of it because it feels true to the canonical characterisation of the characters and the evolution of the relationship (or invention of it, if they’ve never met before in canon) is a natural extension of that, so feel free to include ships that you really love that I have not mentioned in my fandom specific likes, as long as I haven’t mentioned actively disliking them. Also, this probably goes without saying, but just in case: I am using an interpretation of “rarepair” here includes ships that involve more than two partners.
  • Polyamory/non-monogamy, very much including forms of non-monogamy other than polyfidelitous triads, such as vee arrangements, polycules or open relationships etc.
additional detailsYour fic can be primarily about X/Y and have it as a background detail that this relationship is non-monogamous, if you like. I really like fic that is about X/Y, but X’s canonical relationship with Z also exists in the fic without anyone cheating or getting jealous. For examples of the kind of thing I mean, [archiveofourown.org profile] cosmic_llin has some great fic where Deanna Troi is dating something who is not her canonical love interest Will Riker, while also being in an open relationship with Riker.
  • Emotionally intense and tempestuous co-dependent relationships, which can either get healthier over the course of the narrative or remain very much a "don’t try this at home" kind of depiction.
  • Unironic “issuefic.”
additional detailsThis is a term that turns up in DNWs rather than likes in a lot of fandom exchange letters, in my experience, but I genuinely love reading about The Issues™. This can include, but is not limited to, things like disability theory adjacent themes, trans headcanons, depictions of characters being very deliberate and careful about respecting consent, unironic depictions of characters talking like they’re trying to get a good grade in therapy (maybe He Would Not Fucking Say That, but if we’re going to limit ourselves to what he would fucking do and say why not just call it quits on fandom and stick to canon, lol), examinations of the broader social context of the settings of various fandoms, middle aged men trying to be kind.
  • Kid fic.
additional detailsI prefer if the kid seems broadly realistic for the age they are depicted as being, but what is typical at a certain age varies a lot (I certainly had a very spiky developmental profile myself as a child) so don’t stress about it.
  • Knitting or other kinds of crafts, especially from authors who are crafters and especially-especially when it includes technical or jargon-y details.
  • Speaking of jargon, I love STEM-y things being featured in fic.
additional detailsAn example of what I mean is things like the stuff about mathematical proofs in [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat‘s Rodney McCay/John Sheppard fic Time in a Bottle. You don’t have to go into enormous depth here to get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of how much it will please me. I nearly swooned when I read the main character of the novel Hold Me by Courtney Milan mention something about something being three standard deviations above the mean.
  • I also love wildly unrealistic and campy fake science escapades.
additional detailsThings à la this Karate Kid fic I wrote where a CEO character’s R&D department creates a super soldier who he falls in love with or this fic [archiveofourown.org profile] trinityofone wrote for the same ship where the CEO character uses fake science, again from his R&D department, to babytrap his love interest. Basically though, if a bubbling, neon green liquid housed in a beaker that is smoking profusely appears in your fic then you are on the right track!
  • Things relating to ageing.
additional details, some NSFW.Including, but not limited to: moments of wistfulness or melancholy about it, older characters having active and fulfilling sex lives, broader themes about ageing, or matter of fact inclusion of details about changes brought about with age. In terms of that last one, I once wrote a fic where a character’s wrist started clicking after he fingered the woman he was having sex with for a long time, so stuff along those lines is great. That fic also had some sci-fi age-related stuff about the Phase where post-menopausal Betazoids’ sex drive quadruples or more, so feel free to include speculative/sci-fi stuff about ageing too if it fits the setting of your fic!
  • Stuff about (wanted) pregnancy. I have some pregnancy related DNWs at the link here, so if this is an option you’re attracted to, please click through to see what I do not want from this kind of story.
additional details about what I do like (some NSFW) Including, but not limited to: cloyingly fluffy family fic, breeding kink (and/or risky sex) and overly specific and/or scientific details about pregnancy itself. These details can relate to real pregnancy or speculative/sci-fi pregnancies featuring alien physiology or artificial wombs, etc. Speculative/sci-fi pregnancy does not have to be realistic for me to enjoy it! Depictions of real pregnancy would ideally have a higher degree of realism though, as pregnancy has been a long standing special interest of mine. I don’t mean, by this though, that you have to give someone a difficult pregnancy because they’re over 36 and that’s “more realistic” or something (also, fwiw, my aunt had her first baby at 48 and she had a very healthy and active pregnancy with both of her children), just that I would prefer that any specifics that you mention are accurate (so no feeling the baby kick before 16 weeks, for example). If you want to write about someone having a difficult pregnancy, or complications like gestational diabetes, though, go right ahead! I would ask though that if you go this route that it’s more along the lines of h/c than something that ends tragically. Regarding abortion, where termination is discussed (if, for example, the pregnancy was unplanned and the potential parent is thinking about options) I would strongly prefer that it was in a pro-choice context, unless you really feel that one or more of the characters would be pro-life and the overall narrative itself did not endorse them on this. I’m totally open to angsty fic about infertility that does not end with the character becoming pregnant, however.
Notes regarding mpreg and people other than cis women getting pregnantCis mpreg heavily depends on execution for me and I am generally not that interested in it—when I do read it, I prefer cis mpreg where pregnancy is not the norm for cis men in that universe and it’s contextually a fake science or magic-related thing. I am okay with trans mpreg, especially written by other transmasculine authors, and with other AFAB trans people getting pregnant as long as it is a wanted pregnancy and any depictions of dysphoria are not extremely graphic. If you would like to write a story where a trans woman or transfeminine or other AMAB trans person gets pregnant, then I’m totally open to that and my preferences for that align more closely to the ones I’ve mentioned for speculative/sci-fi pregnancy than to my preferences relating to cis men being depicted as being pregnant. Rather than wanting the pregnancy to be depicted as unusual or unique, as is my preferance for cis mpreg, I would prefer a fic where transition related healthcare has progressed or is on the cusp or progressing far enough to allow this kind of pregnancy to happen. Also, despite what I just said about preferring this kind of pregnancy not to be depicted as being singular in-universe, if you want to write fic where your character has gotten pregnant after being granted a wish by fairies, set in a universe where transition related healthcare has not, and will not in the near future, allow for AMAB people to get pregnant, go right ahead! This is relatively uncharted territory, fic-wise, to my knowledge, so go forth and be fruitful, as it were 😉 My only truly strong preference here would be that your character is pregnant due to wanting to be pregnant rather than for another reason.
  • Since I mentioned it briefly in the above bullet point: speculative or canon alien physiology in settings where this is relevant.
additional details (mildly NSFW?)Can be related to non-human typical genital configurations like Spock’s various fanonical space!junk, or more along the lines of Spock’s heart being where a human’s liver would be, and him having copper based blood.
  • Inclusion of sensory and sensual details (which may or may not be erotic).
  • Non-penetrative sex.
additional detailsThe characters can be actively choosing not to have non-penetrative sex specifically because of practical concerns, such as them don’t want to risk pregnancy, or them wanting to fuck right the fuck now and not wanting to wait for an opportune time for anal, or a character having vaginismus, or one or more of the characters just not really liking penetration. It can also just be something with non-penetrative sex without the need to justify that choice in-text. I really like when fics don’t make a distinction between penetrative and non-penetrative sex in terms of what is considered to be “real” sex, e.g. things like characters referring to a time they had oral sex as, “When we fucked” in dialogue, or similar casual nods to non-penetrative sex also being sex.
    • Intercrural sex specifically. This can transition into penetrative sex or not.
    • Oral sex of all varieties. I don’t particularly care about erotica being historical accurate or not (or, indeed, about erotica being strictly realistic in general—it can be fun to write realistic sex, but if you want to write impromptu anal fisting, go for it! I have, lol), so feel free to include it in a setting where it would be unlikely, e.g. the Golden Age of Piracy.
  • Virginity kink, especially if the fic itself doesn’t buy into the social construction of virginity as a concept.
I don’t mind if this is not something in play though, and I can definitely tell the difference between id-heavy smutty fan fiction and writing intended to be taken as a strictly literal account of how things are or should be.

  • Mundane/modern AUs (e.g. college or coffee shop AUs, etc.), Harry Potter AUs/fusions, AUs or pre-canon fic where the characters are aged down.
random tangent about Scooby DooAlthough, come to think of it, I’d love to see a fic, AU or post-canon, where characters were depicted as much older than they appear in canon, e.g. something like the gang from the original 1969 Scooby Doo cartoon in the modern day as 70-somethings … in this purely hypothetical Scooby Doo fic that nobody will ever write though, Scooby is obviously still alive, typical 8-10 year lifespan of a Great Dane be damned.
(return to where you left off in Likes)
  • Pregnancy related DNWs:
    • Unwanted pregnancy.
    • Fic where a character is coerced or tricked into becoming pregnant, even if they come around to the idea and/or are not upset by it (babytrapping from the side of the gestational parent isn’t a problem for me, because it’s a bodily autonomy thing for me mainly and also I’m a hypocrite).
    • Fic where the overall narrative explicitly promotes a pro-life sentiment.
    • Pregnancy fic where the pregnancy ends in abortion (re: the apparent contradiction with the last bullet point, for me this is like “there was only one bed” fic where they resolve it with someone sleeping on the couch, because I like pregnancy fic and the kind I seek out start from a premise that the pregnancy is wanted, even if unplanned).
    • Fic where the pregnancy ends in miscarriage, unless the character does manage to carry a pregnancy to term (or after 12 weeks, with the implication that they will carry to term) by the end of the story and the miscarriages are not depicted graphically. (return to where you left off in Likes)
  • Dark fic. I’m fine with angsty or bittersweet fic or with stories that are framed as tragedies, but I do not want something that is primary intended to be disturbing, or that is unrelentingly miserable with no reprieve and no catharsis at the end.
  • More than passing depictions of bigotry. You do not have to engage in historical revisionism or erase bigotry that exists in canon or the real world and I do enjoy fic that engages with the broader social contexts of various fandom settings, but I do not want a fic that is centred primarily around experiences of bigotry.
  • Fetishisation or romanticisation of a marginalised group.
additional detailsFor example: race play, fetishisation of trans people, fat fetishism, fetishisation of physically disabled people’s bodies, romanticisation of mental illness, etc. One exception is that I do have a weakness for clueless class privileged characters who are poverty tourists, à la the song Common People, so I will say that I’m generally neutral-to-positive on this one, provided the character whose socioeconomic circumstances are being romanticised explicitly thinks that the poverty tourist is being a privileged dick (regardless of whether they also still have, or want to have, sex and/or a relationship with them).
  • Intimate partner violence or other related forms of abuse.
additional detailsI do like some specific ships where the characters are unhealthily obsessed with each other and mutually destructive, but I do not like fics where a character is primarily a victim of their partner rather than someone willingly walking into a lake of bad decisions with their partner and drowning, hand in unlovable hand. N.B. I don’t mean by this distinction that I think that anyone in a real life abusive relationship is culpable for the abuse they suffer in any way.
NSFW DNWs
  • Kink related DNWs:
    • Consensual non-consent or other rape fantasies.
    • 24–7 D/s relationships.
    • Master/slave relationships.
    • Humiliation kink. Non-kinky humiliation is fine.
    • Desperation kink.
    • Edging.
    • Chastity belts/cages, etc.
    • Degrading or insulting language in a kink context.
    • Erotic asphyxiation. Non-erotic choking is okay.
    • Heavy pain play. Light impact kink or discomfort from restraints is fine.
    • Sadism.
    • Sounding.
    • Things likely to edge near a hygiene squick.
  • Non-con or dub-con.
  • Characters consenting to sex they think they won’t like, whether they turn out to be right about this or not.
  • Detailed descriptions of sex that is painful or unpleasant.
additional details While I love badsex where it all goes pear-shaped in a way that’s funny to both the reader and the characters, and I love fic where characters get better at communicating what they enjoy sexually and their sex life improving as a result, I really don’t want to read long or in-depth depictions of characters being subjected to sex they absolutely hate with a partner who is either unaware that they don’t like it, or doesn’t care, that never gets any better.

Requests

Requested Fandoms (be wary of spoilers!)
LeverageThis can include the new show, Leverage: Redemption, or not depending on your preference. I ship Eliot Spencer/Alec Hardison/Parker, Alec Hardison/Parker, Nate Ford/Sophie Devereaux(/Jim Sterling), Sophie Devereaux/Harry Wilson, Breanna/literally any cool woman, and I am also a big fan of character studies and gen fic.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • Sophie Devereaux/Parker
  • Sophie Devereaux/Eliot Spencer
  • Eliot Spencer/Maria Shipp (unless it’s not endgame)
  • Completely unironic implications that the cops/the System are a force for justice and good.
Willow (2022)Ngl, I am still absolutely devastated that this show was not only cancelled, but taken off Disney plus and I am Not going to get getting over it any time soon. I think it was so disrespectful to the young actors who put so much into their roles and to Warwick Davies who had returned this this role that he played at 19, because he cared so much about the character. But. Anyway. I really, really love all the characters in this show and there is no wrong move here. I love Kit Tanthalos so, so much, because she is so messy and intense and vulnerable in a way that you don’t often get to see female characters be—she is Blorbo. I love her canonical romance with Jade Claymore and also her intense Whatever with Elora Danan. If Jade weren’t in the picture, I would ship Kit/Elora to hell and back, but I also love seeing it as a sibling rivalry kind of thing? I am also very much in love with the other characters and I sigh happily over all of them on the regular, so if Kit isn’t calling to you then feel free to cast a wider net!
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • I don’t NoTP it or anything, but I haven’t been especially drawn to any of the Elora/Jade/Kit fic I’ve seen
  • Non-canonical character death
Fandom Specific DNWs

A League of Their Own (2022)Another show I am still spitting mad about the way it was treated by the streaming service it was produced by. Support the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and SWG strikes, guys! I love this show so much. The main canonical ships are all amazing, but I also really love the gen relationships and the comradery and solidarity that the characters have (or fail to have) for each other. I love Lupe García/Jess McCready, and both of their relationships with Esti González
, but there really is nowhere you could look in this show that I wouldn’t love.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • Fic that portrays Bertie Hart as a GNC cis woman
  • Jess/Esti
  • Lupe/Esti
  • biphobia or bi erasure
The Karate Kid/Cobra KaiI have been very intense about this franchise for a few years now and I don’t see that stopping any time soon. I love Daniel LaRusso/Johnny Lawrence (which is far and away the biggest ship in the fandom), but I also love John Kreese/Terry Silver, Tory Nichols/Sam LaRusso(/Miguel Dias/Robby Keene), Daniel LaRusso/Amanda LaRusso(/Johnny Lawrence), Johnny Lawrence/Carmen Dias, and others. I really like how this fandom lends itself to fic about the cycle of violence and trauma, but also can be extremely silly.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • Imitating Mr. Miyagi’s accent.
  • Anything that takes the idea that Daniel was “the real bully” or that he was (even partially) responsible for being bullied in the first movie. It’s okay from an IC POV, but not as something endorsed by the narrative itself.
  • Teen ships that are not Sam/Tory or a polyship that includes Sam and Tory
  • Contact mods for a sensitive DNW that I don't feel comfortable listing publicly
The Tick (2017)This show is incredibly charming and I love it to distraction. I ship Arthur Everest/the Tick, but I am also a huge Dot Everest/Overkill (aka Esteban aka Straight Shooter) shipper.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • Arthur Everest/Dangerboat
  • Overkill/Miss Lint (aka Janet) (except as backstory)
  • The Tick’s suit coming off/molting off and him just having a normal human body beneath, to faciliate a sex scene. Weird xeno sex or bust!
SuccessionI was hesitant to watch Succession for the longest time, because I saw a lot of self deprecating jokes from fans of the show about stanning 1%er business majors and was like “Eh, pass” but then I heard that there is a canonical kinky affair between a younger (late 30s) man and an older (mid 60s) woman and was like oh okay, now this I gotta see! I just … love these terrible people so much. They suck (affectionate) (derogatory). I obviously ship Roman Roy/Gerri Kellman, but I am also a fan of Shiv Roy/Tom Wambsgans (I am of the opinion that she really does love him, which is very inconvenient and embarrassing for her) and gen Roy sibling family feels (of both the endearing and the less endearing kinds).
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • Tom Wambsgans/Greg Hirsch
  • Kendall Roy POV
Singin’ in the RainI love this movie so much! I am such a sucker for movies (and musicals, come to that) that are about ~showbusiness~ and take place behind the scenes for a lot of the action. I find it such a fun framing device and it’s a way to play with the fourth wall that I really like. I hardcore ship Don Lockwood/Kathy Selden/Cosmo Brown (and any pairing within those three, honestly) and I love how much fun they have together and the affectionate way they poke fun at each other and support one another.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • I do love Lina Lamont, but anything that paints her as a tragic victim of patriarchy who did nothing wrong is a bit eyeroll-y to me.
CommunityThis show is really important to me, as I think it’s the first time I’ve seen a character who is coded autistic who really maps very closely onto my experience of latching onto narrative to understand the world. Abed Nadir is the Blorbo of all time. In terms of ships, I really like any variation on the theme of Abed Nadie/Annie Edison/Troy Barnes (both shippy and gen), and I am constantly five seconds away from dropping my TED Talk about how Jeff Winger/Shirley Bennett is criminally underrated. I also quite enjoy Jeff Winger/Dean Craig Pelton and I do think that queer sex might fix Jeff. Or at least be fun!
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • A focus on Britta Perry/Jeff Winger, Britta Perry/Troy Barnes, Jeff Winger/Annie Edison, or Britta Perry/Annie Edison
  • Britta Perry POV
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • I don’t know how likely this is, but nothing where anything bad happens to Winnie (Oliver’s dog)
Our Flag Means DeathI really feel like my life is now divided into pre-OFMD and post-OFMD, because apparently now blatant queer subtext between the main characters in a mainstream show that hasn’t been marketed as an LGBT show is like … not automatically queerbaiting? Sometimes it’s actually going to pay off??? That said, while I do absolutely adore Stede Bonnet/Ed (Blackbeard) Teach, I am really besotted with the ensemble cast and I love gen fic about them as well as shippy fic about other ships. I went completely hog wild writing Frenchie/Wee John fic when season one came out, but I also really like Jim Jimenez/Oluwande, Oluwande/Frenchie(/Wee John), Lucius Spriggs/Black Pete, Jim/Lucius and I feel like I could definitely be convinced of some sad post-S1 finale Frenchie/Jim fic. I also ship Izzy Hands/Lucius on principle and, again, I think that queer sex might fix Izzy. I feel like he is pretty unambiguously in love with Ed in canon, and I am not averse to him getting in on the main ship in Izzy/Ed/Stede fic.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • Imitating Jim’s accent.
  • Imitating the way Black Pete’s cleft palate affects his speech.
  • Killing Lucius for real.
Good Omens (TV)I’m a lifelong fan of the book, but I was an avid lurker in the GO fandom in the early to mid–2000s, but I have only gotten into the TV fandom after the second season. Similarly to what I said about OFMD, again, truly it is a brave new world out there! I love Aziraphale/Crowley, but I have also fallen—nay plummetted, no vaguely santering about it—into shipping Beelzebub/Gabriel and I sigh dreamily over them several times a day. I also ship Newton Pulsifer/Anathema Device, fwiw, but I don’t know how much fic there is out there for them. I know that when I was doggedly looking in the early 2000s there wasn’t a lot, haha.
Fandom Specific DNWs
  • She/her or he/him pronouns used in narration to refer to Beelzebub, Muriel (the 37th degree angelic scrivener from S2), Pollution (the horseperson of the apocalypse who took over from Pestilence), or other characters who canonically use they/them pronouns. In-character mistakes are okay.

To anyone else reading letters to look for people to treat, hi there! I have gifts enabled on my AO3 account, so treat away if you so desire, and thank you for the kind thought.

obstinatecondolement: The character Mr. Messy from the Mr. Men books against a white background, similar to the cover of a Mr. Men or Little Miss book. The image is captioned, "Little Mx Executive Dysfunction." (little mx executive dysfunction)

I've been signing up for a lot of fandom bingo stuff and feeling Very Bad about how many bingo cards I have signed up for in the past and then never finished (or, in many cases, started), so I guiltily took a look at my [community profile] 100fandoms bingo card (never updated since I signed up in January 2019 until now) and filled out what squares I could from fic that I have posted since I signed up. Technically, it's not against the rules to use fic you wrote before signing up, but I wanted to limit it to what I've done since then. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to fill out 23 squares even though I hadn't been actively working on it. Like, sure, it's nearly been five years, but it's certainly more than I expected given how all-consuming Cobra Kai was for me for a hot minute of several consecutive years there, lol.

I think I am going to keep chipping away at it, because going through my works on AO3 for all these various fandoms where I only ever wrote one (or a few) fics made me realise how much I like those works and how good I think a lot of them are. I said this in my update to the post I linked above, but I have often felt inhibited from writing in certain fandoms either because I think No One Will Care outside of Yuletide season, or because I only have 1–3 ideas in me for that fandom and I don't want people to be disappointed if I just breeze through, drop a few things they like, and then leave forever. But, like, that's very silly. I should write things because it's fun and because I like them before I worry about My Public. I am not a professional writer whose livelihood depends on having a wide readership and nor do I have to tie myself down to a specific Brand Identity to avoid confusing or alienating readers who liked my X books but then hated my Y books. It's just for fun! So I should have fun! Which I do, when I let myself, so I think I'm just gonna take this as a sign to give fewer shits and just write the damn thing if I have an idea I am compelled by.
