I have heard from people who saw it on stage that it lost a lot in translation back to film, which seems not unlikely to me. I'd certainly go and see it if there was a production relatively local to me, and I did really love the film version of the play at the time, but when it comes to the original, those really were some very big shoes that Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder left for others who followed them to fill.
