Like a dandelion up through the pavement, I persist

I've heard that from a few fans who speak English as an additional language! That smut in their native language is embarrassing or squicky in a way that English language smut is not, I mean. I wonder why that is? As someone who is mostly monolingual, I'm always very interested in the way people who are multilingual relate differently to their different languages and how different languages open up different facets of their own personalities sometimes. I have a friend who is a native English speaker who says they can only express themselves emotionally in Russian and I recently met someone from Brazil who said they could never date someone who only spoke Portugese, because they can only be honest about their feelings in English.
